30th Annual Spirit Award Nominees Announced; Indiewire on How Film Independent Went “Off the Rails” (in a Good Way) with their Choices; John Waters Mouths “Happy Birthday”

November 26, 2014 by Lamb L.

The Spirit Awards turn 30 next February 21, and lots of the film we’ve shown, are showing or will show are up for shiny hardware. BIRDMAN and BOYHOOD are the worthy nominees with the most nods, but other terrific, startlingly original films you can see at Laemmle Theatres include CITIZENFOUR, MOMMY, WHIPLASH, SELMA, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT and more. John Waters, a frequent host of the proceedings, calls it his “kind of crowd…sexually confused…and financially challenged.” Here are his birthday wishes for Spirit Awards:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6FtXE3uoSU

Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson of Indiewire are pleased with Film Independent’s Choices, which they think are a return to the organization’s non-conformist roots. (Last year the Spirit Awards and Oscars were carbon copies of each other in most of the major categories.) Listen to their conversation.

Operation Firefly Goes Live!

November 20, 2014 by Lamb L.

With the help of the LAEMMLE FOUNDATION, our friends at the LACBC (Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition) are it again!  They’re hitting the streets and making Southland roads safer by distributing free bicycle lights.  It’s all part of their annual OPERATION FIREFLY.

Here’s how it works: LACBC’s street team descends (unannounced) upon a surprise location that typically experiences a high volume of cyclists during the peak commute hours of 5-7pm.  With the recent turning back of the clock, these are dark hours, perfect for sussing out bicycles in need of lights. Operation Firefly volunteers stop any non-illuminated cyclist and offer to install high-quality front and rear LED lights completely free of charge! In addition to the lights, recipients receive an informational “spoke card” that explains the laws for riding at night and includes vital safety tips.

This year, thousands of lights will be given away through over 25 distribution events across the L.A region including multiple sites in the valley, city, and all the way down to Long Beach. The program continues until we turn the clock forward in March.

Distribution site are not announced in advance. But you can get the scoop the day of a giveaway by subscribing to the LACBC’s Twitter Feed.   And all those who include #OperationFirefly in their social media posts during the run of the program will be eligible to win prizes such as LACBC memberships, Operation Firefly Merchandise, and Laemmle prizes (including movie tickets).

As mentioned above, this year the Laemmle Foundation is proud to be the primary sponsor of Operation Firefly. With the support of the Foundation, LACBC is striving to double the number of lights distributed in 2014 from the previous year.

Greg Laemmle volunteers at this season's inaugural Operation Firefly distribution a the NoHo Metro station just blocks away from the NoHo 7.

LACBC Programs Director
COLIN BOGART remarks, “We are thrilled to have the Laemmle Foundation as our ‘guiding light’ for Operation Firefly this year.”
He continues, “And by making city streets safer for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists, we’re pleased to be doing our part in fulfilling the foundation’s aim of ‘projecting a brighter future for L.A.'”

As part of our involvement, Laemmle volunteers will be on-hand at a number of the distributions to assist in the light give-aways and perhaps even give away samples of our world-famous popcorn!  Stay current with our Operation Firefly involvement and other happenings via Twitter at — twitter.com/laemmle.  And be sure to stay connected with the Laemmle Foundation and join the conversation via #laemmlegiving.

You can support Operation Firefly by “gifting” a set of lights, buying program merch (very cool cycling caps and vests!) or through simple donations.  Get all the details HERE.

Greg Laemmle on transforming neighborhoods into pedestrian-friendly business hubs

October 13, 2014 by Lamb L.

In last week’s issue of the Los Angeles Business Journal (membership required), Greg Laemmle urged leaders in Sacramento and Los Angeles to help create a greener, more connected Los Angeles through good policy, urban planning, and smart business practices.

Business owners often have a stereotype of being cold and dismissive of their employees and the local area’s needs. However, this is a stereotype of owners in the past and isn’t true for the newest, brightest owners and CEO’s who understand that in order to have a thriving business, every part of the business needs to be looked after.

For the employees, this includes providing employee benefits, have a high-quality HR system that deals with issues quickly, and look for new ways to keep employees engaged. Using Zenefits for HR software is a good idea for companies who want to maintain a good working environment for their employees. However, it’s not just the employees that need to be considered. Providing care and resources for the local area will help businesses be thought of fondly by the locals and ensure a good public image. This mutually benefits the area and business which is why Laemmle is calling for businesses to contribute to transforming neighborhoods into pedestrian-friendly business hubs. To contribute to this, businesses should really consider installing Burglar alarms in order to deter criminals from operating in the neighborhood which will, in turn, encourage more consumers and business owners to show an interest in the area. If businesses show that they care about their premises enough to take their security seriously, this will give customers confidence in their local businesses.

Greg cited the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena as an example of how an infrastructure that encourages walking, cycling, and public transit can benefit commerce and community.
“When we built the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena in 1999, we used shared-parking agreements. There was an understanding that as the area grew, the Playhouse District would add parking. Once the Gold Line started running in the area, many of the surface parking lots in the immediate vicinity of the theater were developed into mixed-use buildings with retail on the ground floor and residential units above. The area became denser, more vibrant – a real 24-hour neighborhood.

The Playhouse District never did add more parking but our business hasn’t suffered. Instead, people are finding alternative ways to get to the area – walking, biking or taking public transit. The economic boom that made the neighborhood more vibrant happened without adding parking – instead, we helped create a more authentic neighborhood commercial experience, and the city of Pasadena saved money for other vital needs.”
We hope to replicate the success of the Playhouse 7 in the coming months when we break ground on the Laemmle Lofts project in Glendale, a five-screen theater with 42 apartments and 6,000 square feet of commercial space.

Download and read the full article: Measuring-Commerce-by-Foot-LA-Business-Journal.PDF

A special note to our Valley fans: We continue to search for similar projects in West Valley neighborhoods and sincerely appreciate your support.

Greg Laemmle with Preston Sturges’ Sons and THE LADY EVE at Last Remaining Seats

June 19, 2014 by Lamb L.

We are longtime fans of the L.A. Conservancy’s annual program Last Remaining Seats and on June 11 Laemmle Theatres President Greg Laemmle presented the pricelessly funny 1941 comedy THE LADY EVE at the Los Angeles Theatre.

Beforehand he moderated a Q&A with two of filmmaker Preston Sturges’ sons, Preston Sturges Jr. and Tom Sturges. You can watch his introduction and the Q&A HERE.

At 18:20, don’t miss Tom Sturges talking about his upcoming book and then reading an amazingly candid letter from his late father about his relationship with the Lady Eve herself, Barbara Stanwyck.

There is still time to catch a screening at this year’s Last Remaining Seats.  Upcoming programs include Luis Bunuel’s EL GRAN CALAVERA (The Great Madcap, 1949) at the astounding Los Angeles Theatr, Wed. June 25 and CITIZEN KANE (1941) at the Orpheum, Sat. June 28 for both a matinee and evening showing.

Visit the L.A. Conservancy web page for tickets and details.
