Glendale Arts Summer Soiree “Under A Thousand Stars” to Honor Laemmle Theatres’ Greg & Tish Laemmle.

Laemmle Theatres President Greg Laemmle and his wife Tish Laemmle are being honored by the good folks at Glendale Arts “in recognition of their unparalleled legacy of dedication to independent filmmakers and the art of storytelling on the screen.” Glendale Arts is an award-winning 501(c)3 non-profit organization that generates opportunities throughout greater Los Angeles to showcase, promote, encourage, and engage with the arts. From their announcement:

Glendale Arts proudly announces the organization’s highly-anticipated Summer Soiree “Under A Thousand Stars” to be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 7:00-10:00 P.M. at ace/121 Gallery. Tickets for the event of the season are now available for purchase here.

Guests are invited to revel in the dazzling beauty of the gallery, transformed into an elegant indoor/outdoor spectacle of art and performance. The inspirational evening will comprise epicurean delights, artful mixology, a silent auction featuring original works of art by emerging and renowned artists from the Los Angeles area and beyond, and a celebratory program highlighting GA’s dynamic programmatic pillars – the Glendale International Film Festival, Solo Fest, and ace/121 Gallery.

A highlight of the event will be the presentation of The Aura, Glendale Arts’ inaugural award honoring luminaries who power the arts. The first-ever recipients of The Aura are Laemmle Theatres Head Greg Laemmle and his wife Tish Laemmle, Art in the Arthouse Curator at the family-run theatres which have brought the best of foreign and independent cinema to Los Angeles for over 85 years. The Laemmles will be honored in recognition of their unparalleled legacy of dedication to independent filmmakers and the art of storytelling on the screen.

Summer Soiree proceeds benefit Glendale Arts, the city’s premier arts non-profit. Funds raised will support GA’s mission to cultivate year-round opportunities for artists and audiences to convene around mutually enriching experiences that promote creativity, foster meaningful connections, and build community through the performing, cinematic, and visual arts mediums.

“We are excited to bring supporters and community, business, and industry leaders together for a night that salutes the transformative power of the arts,” said Glendale Arts Board Chair Marci DeSousa. “The Summer Soiree will not only showcase the heart and soul that drives Glendale Arts’ mission, but will also celebrate what distinguishes GA as a unique non-profit with local roots, regional impact, and a global footprint.”

The Fahey/Klein Gallery on La Brea has the Desire to See: Photographs by Agnès Varda exhibit open to the public for just a little while longer, until April 13, and if you’re a Varda fan, experience her photography in person. You may have been exposed to her brilliant movies, in which you caught glimpses of some of her photos. Now for the first time you can actually see these and other photos and it’s a very rare treat, at times emotional, at times funny, always delightful. You can see photographs of Harrison Ford and Fidel Castro as well as magnificent self portraits and much more. It is not to be missed. From the gallery’s description:

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present “Desire to See: Photographs by Agnès Varda”, the first exhibition in the United States dedicated exclusively to Agnès Varda’s photographic work. This retrospective exhibition delves into the rich photographic history of the French New Wave filmmaker and provides a comprehensive visual narrative of Varda’s life and creative pursuits through a diverse selection of photographs spanning from vintage lifetime prints developed and printed by Varda to newly discovered posthumous works.

Desire to See: Photographs by Agnès Varda showcases Varda’s self-portraits, offering an introspective look into the artist’s identity alongside portraits of fellow artists (Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalí, Delphine Seyrig, Federico Fellini, Catherine Deneuve, Luchino Visconti, and more), highlighting her radical vision and passionate engagement with the world.  Documentary photographs from her extensive travels through diverse locations such as Cuba, China, and Los Angeles, as well as her beloved home in Paris, illustrate her keen observational eye. Varda’s photographic career predates her filmmaking and intersects fluidly throughout her six decades of creative pursuits. Still photographs often influenced and inspired her films, as is the case of Le Pointe Courte and Ulysse, and likewise filmmaking was the subject and context for her still photographs. Varda’s eternally free spirit guided her restless curiosity and imagination while defining a strong, clear, experimental, feminine voice visible within every frame.

Documentary about Laemmle ONLY IN THEATERS plays Saturday at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

     This Saturday presents a chance for an advance screening of the documentary Only in Theaters at the Newport Beach Film Festival. The filmmaker and some cast members will be there for a Q&A. We’ve been in business since 1938 but this is the first time we’ve been the subject of a film. Director Raphael Sbarge started filming a few months before the pandemic started and it was an opportune moment in terms of dramatic content because of course COVID-19 shut us down for a year, but he kept on filming. Variety Magazine described the film as “2022’s most emotional theatrical experience so far…watching Greg Laemmle struggle with the fate of his family’s eponymous arthouse business.”
     Synopsis: The Laemmle Theatres, a beloved 84-year-old art house cinema chain in Los Angeles, is facing seismic change. The family members behind this multigenerational business—whose sole mission has been to support the art of film—remain determined, despite enormous challenges.
     Some of the people interviewed for Only in Theaters include Ava DuVernay, Cameron Crowe, James Ivory, Nicole Holofcener, Kevin Thomas, Leonard Maltin, Kenneth Turran, Allison Anders, and Greg Laemmle.
     If you want to wait to see Only in Theaters at a Laemmle Theatre, we’ll open it on 11/18 at the Royal and other venues.

Bicycle Benevolence: Ride the Tour de Summer Camps October 31.

For years, we here at Laemmle Theatres have been passionate supporters of cycling — bicycles can save the world! — especially for a good cause. A good cause is coming up next month: Tour de Summer Camps.

From Greg Laemmle: “Funds raised go directly to providing scholarships for L.A. kids to attend summer camp.  The money stays in the community, and helps provide life-changing (and life-improving) experiences for kids who will grow up to become the leaders of our community, Jewish and otherwise. Laemmle Theatres would not be what it is today were it not for the lessons learned by me while growing up at Camp Alonim, or the sense of mission instilled in company VP Jay Reisbaum from his years as a camper and staff member at Camp Ramah.
“We know that all our patrons are not Jewish (to steal a line from INDEPENDENCE DAY, “Nobody’s perfect.”), but we hope that all our patrons can recognize that the Jewish community has contributed much to the tapestry that is Los Angeles, and help us in giving something back through this event.

Local fine art photographer Peter Bennett has a beautiful new, long-in-the-works book coming out called The Los Angeles River and Greg and Tish Laemmle are thrilled to help spread the word: “Peter had a terrific Art in the Arthouse show at our NoHo theatre a few years back. We now have some of the photos at our other venues, and we also have several prints in our permanent collection. We’ve been longtime supporters of Friends of the L.A. River, FOLAR, via the Laemmle Charitable Foundation, and believe that anything that can be done to change the perception of the River will be for the benefit of the city. The River is there, trying to break through the concrete and bring nature back to the city.  We just have to stop fighting and instead help it. Peter’s photographs help bring that message to the fore.”

LAEMMLE LIVE presents The Santa Monica Symphony with Rich Capparela July 14

LAEMMLE LIVE proudly presents musicians from the Santa Monica Symphony featuring Susan Greenberg-Flute, Sara Canning-Clarinet, Guido Lamell-Violin, Carol Sandstrom-Viola and Tom Lloyd-Cello. The ensemble will perform works by Mozart, Beethoven, Crusell and Haydn. Beloved classical radio announcer Rich Capparela returns to Laemmle Live to host. Santa Monica Symphony, heralded by the Huffington Post as the “crown jewel of Southern California’s community orchestras” has been serving the community through quality, free concerts since 1945.

The Santa Monica Symphony enhances lifelong learning through special open rehearsals and performances at local schools, libraries and community events. The orchestra presents six concerts annually at Santa Monica HighSchool’s Barnum Hall and other locations, including the annual Martin Luther King Day concert at Santa Monica’s SGI auditorium. Santa Monica Symphony Music Director and Conductor Guido Lamell, who also serves as a violinist for the LA Philharmonic, has led the orchestra for the past seven years in well attended concerts of works ranging from venerable masters to cutting-edge composers. The Santa Monica Symphony will celebrate its 75th anniversary in the upcoming season, and Maestro Lamell and the symphony musicians look forward to presenting another exciting and successful season of concerts to delight the community.

The mission of the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra is to provide free quality classical music concerts to the residents of Santa Monica, Los Angeles County and the Southern California community.

LAEMMLE LIVE presents Dyad in Santa Monica June 2

LAEMMLE LIVE proudly presents Dyad, an innovative violin and bassoon duo on a quest to explore uncharted territory. After meeting at Juilliard, Niv Ashkenazi and Leah Kohn were inspired to create a new kind of chamber music. Unwilling to let a lack of repertoire stand in their way, they thrive on reimagining classic works as well as premiering new pieces. Through engaging, personal performances, they create connections between audience, performers, and music. Sunday’s performance will include pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Gernot Wolfgang, and Niccolo Paganini. Since their first performance in May 2015, they have given concerts for the Wednesdays@Noon series at the Encinitas Library, the Classical Music Series at the Peninsula Center Library, the Cultural Arts Society of La Verne, Newport Beach’s Sunday Musicales, and other performances in Southern California, in venues ranging from the Skirball Center to art galleries and private homes. Dyad has collaborated with Lineage Dance and TranscenDanceGroup on performances which relate stories through dance, music, and other mediums. They have also appeared as guest artists and speakers at exclusive business networking events sharing their music and passion for innovation with a wider community. Dyad has given several world premieres of works written for and commissioned by them. In May 2017, they gave several performances in New Jersey, including at the Axelrod PerformingArts Center and the Kessler Foundation.

Sharing their music with audiences outside a traditional concert setting is a vital part of Dyad’s mission. They perform as an ensemble for Street Symphony, an organization founded by former Los Angeles Philharmonic member Vijay Gupta, which brings inclusive concerts to people experiencing incarceration and homelessness.
