Holiday Movies with a Twist Every Throwback Thursday in December at the Laemmle NoHo!

November 22, 2016 by Lamb L.

This Just In! Al Leong (Uli, aka the Candy Bar Terrorist in Die Hard) will be introducing the film on Thursday!
Join Laemmle and  Eat|See|Hear for Happy Holidaze at the NoHo 7 in North Hollywood! Every Thursday in December our Throwback Thursday (#TBT) series presents our favorite holiday classics— with a twist! Doors open at 7PM, trivia starts at 7:30PM, and films begin at 7:40PM! It all starts Thursday, December 1st with EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. Check out the full schedule below. For tickets and our full #TBT schedule, visit laemmle.com/tbt!

December 1: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands opens as an eccentric inventor (Vincent Price) lovingly assembles a synthetic youth named Edward (Johnny Depp). Edward has all the essential ingredients for today’s standard body, with the exception of a pair of hands. For what is initially thought to be a temporary period, he is fitted with long, scissor-like extremities that, while able to trim a mean hedge, are hardly conducive to day-to-day life. When the kindly inventor dies, however, Edward is left lonely and cursed with some very heavy metal for hands. He is eventually taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Edward finds himself a local celebrity after the town realizes that his talents include creative hedge trimming and an unrivaled ability to cut hair. His so-called friends are proven fair-weather when Edward is accused of a crime. Buy Tickets.

December 8: DIE HARD

It’s Christmas time in L.A., and there’s an employee party in progress on the 30th floor of the Nakatomi Corporation building. The revelry comes to a violent end when the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal the 600 million dollars locked in Nakatomi’s high-tech safe. In truth, Gruber and his henchmen are only pretending to be politically motivated to throw the authorities off track; also in truth, Gruber has no intention of allowing anyone to get out of the building alive. Meanwhile, New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) has come to L.A. to visit his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), who happens to be one of the hostages. Disregarding the orders of the authorities surrounding the building, McClane, who fears nothing (except heights), takes on the villains, armed with one handgun and plenty of chutzpah. Buy Tickets.

December 15: SCROOGED

A darkly comic and surreal contemporization of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, this effects-heavy Bill Murray holiday vehicle from 1988 sees the former SNL funnyman assuming the role of television executive Frank Cross, the meanest and most depraved man on earth. Cross will stoop to unheard of levels to increase his network’s ratings — even if it means mounting outrageous programs to retain an audience, such as “Robert Goulet’s Cajun Christmas” and Lee Majors in “The Night the Reindeer Died.” Cross plots his foulest move, however, for the Christmas holiday, when he will force his office staff to mount a live production of A Christmas Carol on national television — and thus work through Christmas Eve. Cross’s life is turned upside down with visits from three ghosts: a craggy-faced cabbie known as The Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen); the sugar-plum fairy Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane); and, eventually, the caped, headless Ghost of Christmas Future, who will send Frank sliding into a crematory oven — just before he gives the sleazoid one last chance to redeem himself. Richard Donner directs, from a script by Michael O’Donoghue and Mitch Glazer. Buy Tickets.

December 22: TRADING PLACES

The “nature-nurture” theory that motivated so many Three Stooges comedies is the basis of John Landis’s hit comedy. The fabulously wealthy but morally bankrupt Duke brothers (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) make a one-dollar bet over heredity vs. environment. Curious as to what might happen if different lifestyles were reversed, they arrange for impoverished street hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) to be placed in the lap of luxury and trained for a cushy career in commodities brokerage. Simultaneously, they set about to reduce aristocratic yuppie Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd to poverty and disgrace, hiring a prostitute (Jamie Lee Curtis) to hasten his downfall. When Billy Ray figures out that the brothers intend to dump him back on the streets once their experiment is complete, he seeks out Winthorpe, and together the pauper-turned-prince and prince-turned-pauper plot an uproarious revenge. With the good-hearted prostitute and Winthorpe’s faithful butler (Denholm Elliott) as their accomplices, they set about to hit the brothers where it really hurts: in the pocketbook. Buy Tickets.

Wild(er) November: A Throwback Thursday Tribute to Gene Wilder at the Laemmle NoHo 7.

October 26, 2016 by Lamb L.

Join Laemmle and Eat|See|Hear for WILD(ER) NOVEMBER, a special Throwback Thursday (#TBT) tribute to one of our favorite actors, Gene Wilder.

It kicks off Thursday, November 3rd with WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.  Doors open at 7PM, trivia starts at 7:30PM, and films begin at 7:40PM. Check out the full schedule below or visit http://www.laemmle.com/tbt.

#TBT runs (almost) every Thursday night at the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood. Tickets are $11 and may be purchased online or at the Laemmle NoHo 7 box office. As with regular screenings, discounts are available for children, seniors, and Laemmle Premiere Card holders.

November 3: WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Promoted as a family musical by Paramount Pictures, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is more of a black comedy, perversely faithful to the spirit of Roald Dahl’s original book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) stages a contest by hiding five golden tickets in five of his scrumptious chocolate bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likable young lad named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather (Jack Albertson).
Buy tickets.

November 10: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

In this spoof of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, a neurosurgeon, has spent his life living down the legend of his grandfather, even changing the pronunciation of his name. When he discovers his grandfather’s diary, he begins to feel differently, and returns to the family castle to satisfy his curiosity by replicating his ancestor’s experiments. In the process, he creates one very unique monster.
Buy tickets.

November 17: STIR CRAZY

After teaming up in Silver Streak, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor reunited for this zany comedy in which they play a couple of out-of-work numbskulls who take a promotional job that has them dressed up like woodpeckers. Unfortunately, a pair of thieves, also in woodpecker suits, pulls off a bank heist and the boys are wrongly arrested and sentenced to 120 years each. After a concerted and hilarious effort to make the best of things “in stir,” Wilder and Pryor break out of jail, hoping to track down the actual thieves.
Buy tickets.

November 24: Thanksgiving Day

Sorry, no #TBT screening this week because of Thanksgiving. Enjoy some time with family, friends, and ?. Gobble gobble!

September 29, 2016 by Lamb L.

Join Laemmle and Eat|See|Hear for ROCKTOBER at the NoHo 7 in North Hollywood!

Every Thursday in October our Throwback Thursday (#TBT) series presents four rockin’ films featuring Prince, The Who, The Ramones, and glam rock! Doors open at 7PM, trivia starts at 7:30PM, and films begin at 7:40PM! tbt-rock-under

October 6: UNDER THE CHERRY MOON

Two brothers from Miami are in the Mediterranean enjoying life by scamming rich women. One day they read about a young woman (Kristin Scott Thomas) set to inherit $50 million from her father. At first, Tricky (Jerome Benton) has Christopher Tracy (Prince) talked into romancing her for her money, but as he gets to know her, Christopher falls in love with her.
Buy tickets.

October 13: ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL

With the help of the Ramones, a group of rock and roll-loving students take over their school to combat its newly installed oppressive administration.
Buy tickets.

October 20: QUADROPHENIA

This film version of the Who’s rock opera QUADROPHENIA makes a few tentative stabs at “explaining” the alienation of 1960s British working-class youth, but its major selling point is its nonstop rock and R&B musical score, including the hit single “Love Reign O’er Me.” If you aren’t fascinated by the visual pyrotechnics of QUADROPHENIA, just close your eyes and revel to the soundtrack music of the Who, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Chiffons, Manfred Man, and many others.
Buy tickets.

October 27: VELVET GOLDMINE

In 1984, British journalist Arthur Stuart investigates the career of 1970s glam superstar Brian Slade, who was heavily influenced in his early years by hard-living and rebellious American singer Curt Wild. Todd Haynes wrote and directed this glitzy re-creation of London’s glam-rock scene of the ’70s. The all-star cast includes Christian Bale, Eddie Izzard, Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Toni Collette. The soundtrack features music by Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Brian Eno and more.

tbt-stgala

September 1: GALAXY QUEST

For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector donned their uniforms and set out on thrilling and often dangerous missions in space – then their series was canceled. Twenty years later, the five stars of the classic ’70s series “Galaxy Quest” are still in costume, making appearances at sci-fi conventions for legions of die-hard fans. A group of aliens who have mistaken intercepted television transmissions for “historical documents” arrive at a convention and whisk “Commander Peter Quincy Taggart” and his crew into space to help them in their all-too-real war against a deadly adversary. Get tickets.

tbt-stloSeptember 8: FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK

For the Love of Spock celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek through a personal, intimate look at the life and career of Leonard Nimoy, and his alter-ego, Mr. Spock, as told by his son, Adam Nimoy. FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK filmmaker Adam Nimoy will participate in a Q&A after the screening! Get tickets.

tbt-st2September 15: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OK KHAN

The Federation Starship U.S.S. Enterprise is on routine training maneuvers and Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) seems resigned to the fact that this inspection may well be the last space mission of his career. But Khan is back. Aided by his exiled band of genetic supermen, Khan (Ricardo Montalban) – brilliant renegade of 20th century Earth – has raided Space Station Regula One, stolen a top secret device called Project Genesis, wrested control of another Federation starship, and now schemes to set a most deadly trap for his old enemy Kirk. Get tickets.

tbt-st3September 22: STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK

Admiral Kirk’s defeat of Khan and the creation of the Genesis planet are empty victories. Spock is dead and McCoy is inexplicably being driven insane. Then a surprise visit from Sarek, Spock’s father, provides a startling revelation: McCoy is harboring Spock’s living essence. With one friend alive and one not, but both in pain, Kirk tries to help both by stealing the U.S.S. Enterprise and defying Starfleet’s Genesis planet quarantine. But the Klingons have also learned of Genesis and race to meet Kirk in a deadly rendezvous. Get tickets.

tbt-st4September 29: STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME

A mysterious alien power is threatening Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. In a frantic attempt to save mankind, Kirk and his crew must time travel back to 1986 San Francisco, where they find a world of punk, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything they’ve ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy. Get tickets.

Summer Camp: Every Throwback Thursday in June at the NoHo 7

May 26, 2016 by Lamb L.

mommie-dearestJoin Laemmle and  Eat|See|Hear for Summer Camp at the NoHo 7 in North Hollywood! Every Thursday in June our Throwback Thursday (#TBT) series presents some of our favorite intentionally (and unintentionally) campy films from the last sixty years! It all starts Thursday, June 2nd with VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Check out the full schedule below. For tickets and our full #TBT schedule, visit laemmle.com/tbt!

June 2: Valley of the Dolls

A cinematic take on a 1960s best-seller, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS traces the ups and downs of three young women as fame, booze, pills, and men consume their lives. Well-bred, small-town Anne Welles (Peyton Place star Barbara Parkins) arrives in New York eager for fame but settles for a job assisting theatrical attorney Henry Bellamy (Robert H. Harris). The job leads her to cross paths with Helen Lawson (Hollywood veteran Susan Hayward), the grand dame of Broadway musicals, and Neely O’Hara (Patty Duke), an up-and-coming performer whom Lawson unceremoniously boots from her latest show. As the pressures of fame and failed romance take their toll on all three women, they take refuge in food, sex, liquor, and pills — especially Neely, who becomes downright monstrous (the titular “dolls” are the uppers and downers to which she becomes hopelessly addicted). BUY TICKETS.

tbt-summer-camp-posters

June 9: Female Trouble

A riotously funny bad-taste epic from director John Waters, Baltimore’s “Prince of Puke,” FEMALE TROUBLE tells the depraved life story of obese criminal Dawn Davenport (Divine), from her bad-girl youth as a go-go dancer on Baltimore’s infamous Block to her death in the electric chair. Mink Stole is terrific as Dawn’s bratty daughter Taffy, conceived following a romp on a junkyard mattress with a fat derelict in soiled underpants (also played by Divine). Mary Vivian Pearce and David Lochary co-star as crazed owners of a beauty-parlor who are convinced that “crime equals beauty,” and they take Dawn under their wings, forcing her to mainline liquid eyeliner to enhance her appeal. Edith Massey steals the film as Dawn’s obsessive neighbor, Ida, who wants her nephew to be gay because heterosexuals lead “sick and boring lives.” A hilariously appalling film, Female Trouble is just as disgusting and far funnier than Waters’ previous Pink Flamingos, if not as notorious. BUY TICKETS.

June 16: Mommie Dearest

MOMMIE DEAREST, best-selling memoir turned motion picture, depicts the abusive and traumatic adoptive upbringing of Christina Crawford at the hands of her mother, movie star Joan Crawford. One thing is certain: You’ll never look at a wire hanger the same way again! BUY TICKETS.

priscilla-posterJune 23: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

In THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, the usually menacing British actor Terence Stamp does a complete turnaround as Bernadette, an aging transsexual who tours the backwaters of Australia with her stage partners, Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) and Adam/Felicia (Guy Pearce). Their act, well-known in Sydney, involves wearing lots of makeup and gowns and lip-synching to records, but Bernadette is getting a bit tired of it all and is also haunted by the bizarre death of an old loved one. Nevertheless, when Mitzi and Felicia get an offer to perform in the remote town of Alice Springs at a casino, Bernadette decides to tag along. The threesome ventures into the outback with Priscilla, a lavender-colored school bus that doubles as dressing room and home on the road. Along the way, the act encounters any number of strange characters, as well as incidents of homophobia, while Bernadette becomes increasingly concerned about the path her life has taken. BUY TICKETS.

June 30: Auntie Mame

AUNTIE MAME began as a novel by Patrick Dennis (AKA Ed Fitzgerald), then was adapted into a long-running Broadway play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. In this 1958 film version, Rosalind Russell recreates her stage role as Mame Dennis, the flamboyant, devil-may-care aunt of young, impressionable Patrick Dennis. Left in Mame’s care when his millionaire father dies, young Patrick (Jan Handzlik) is quickly indoctrinated into his aunt’s philosophy that “life is a banquet–and some poor suckers are starving to death.” Social-climbing executor Dwight Babcock (Fred Clark) does his best to raise Patrick as a stuffy American aristocrat, but Mame battles Babcock to allow the boy to be as free-spirited as she is. In 1974, Auntie Mame was remade as the musical Mame starring Lucille Ball. BUY TICKETS.
