June 1: Barbarella

A voluptuous outer space agent travels to another galaxy in search of a missing inventor in this science fiction send-up. Barbarella (Jane Fonda), an interstellar representative of the united Earth government in the 41st century, is dispatched to locate scientist Durand Durand, whose positronic ray, if not recovered, could signal the end of humanity. Outfitted in an array of stunning Star Trek/Bond girl outfits and cruising around in a plush, psychedelic spaceship, Barbarella travels to the Tau Seti system and promptly crash-lands. She then spends the rest of the film discovering the joys of interstellar sex with a variety of characters. BUY TICKETS.

June 8: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

The story of a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer who survives a botched sex change operation. Hedwig subsequently develops a relationship with a younger man, Tommy, becoming his mentor and musical collaborator, only to have Tommy steal her music and move on without her. The film follows Hedwig and her backing band, the Angry Inch, as they shadow Tommy’s tour, while exploring Hedwig’s past and complex gender identity. BUY TICKETS.

June 15: Tootsie

Michael Dorsey is a talented actor, but his demanding nature and stubborn temperament have antagonized every producer in New York. Now his agent insists no one will hire him. But Michael needs money – eight thousand dollars to be exact – and to earn it, he’s prove just how talented an actor he is. Dustin Hoffman stars with Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray and Geena Davis in director Sydney Pollack’s Oscar-nominated gem. BUY TICKETS.

June 22: Cabaret

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to Cabaret. The winner of eight Academy Awards, it boasts a score by the legendary songwriting partnership behind another film that would energize the movie musical genre with equal razzle-dazzle 30 years later: Chicago’s John Kander and Fred Ebb. Inside the Kit Kat Club of 1931 Berlin, starry-eyed singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and an impish emcee (Joel Grey) sound the clarion call to decadent fun, while outside a certain political party grows into a brutal force. Cabaret caught lightning (and won Oscars) for Minnelli, Grey and director Bob Fosse, who shaped a triumph of style and substance. Come to this Cabaret, old chum. You’ll never want to leave. June 29: Cry-Baby

Eisenhower is President. Rock ‘n’ Roll is king. And Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker is the baddest hood in his high school. Johnny Depp heads up a supercool cast as the irresistible bad boy whose amazing ability to shed one single tear drives all the girls wild – especially Allison Vernon Williams (Amy Locane), a rich, beautiful “square” who finds herself uncontrollably drawn to the dreamy juvenile delinquent and his forbidden world of rockabilly music, fast cars and faster women. It’s the hysterical high-throttle world of 1954 in director John Waters’ outrageous musical comedy. BUY TICKETS.

Laemmle Theatres and Eat|See|Hear present a full month of our favorite musicals every Throwback Thursday in May at the NoHo 7 in North Hollywood. May 4: GUYS AND DOLLS
Incorrigible gamblers Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) and Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) involve each other in a complicated plot to maintain “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York,” while dolls Jean Simmons as Sergeant Sarah Brown and Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide try and stand in their way. Luck, as it turns out, is a Lady after all. Get tickets.

May 11: WEST SIDE STORY
One of the most honored and commercially successful of all movie musicals, WEST SIDE STORY earned a near-record 10 Academy Awards in 1961. The film version of the groundbreaking stage musical that re-imagined Romeo and Juliet in contemporary New York City retained and deepened the play’s emotional impact by bringing together a show business all-star team. Robbins and Wise reworked the classic Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score and came up with fresh casting ideas for this ever timely story of racial prejudice and conflict. The stars of the movie included Natalie Wood, Russ Tamblyn, Oscar winner George Chakiris, and Oscar winner Rita Moreno. Get tickets.

May 18: HAIR
Milos Forman’s film adaptation of the popular, controversial Broadway musical Hair follows a reserved Midwesterner (John Savage) who joins a group of hippies in Central Park on his way to joining the Army. The musical numbers were choreographed by Twyla Tharp and sung by vocalists like Ellen Foley, Ronnie Dyson, Nell Carter and Melba Moore. Get tickets.

May 25: FUNNY GIRL
Barbra Streisand makes her Oscar winning film debut in a reprisal of her Broadway role as Ziegfeld star Fanny Brice. Brice, a poor Jewish girl from New York’s Lower East Side, rose to fame and won audience’s hearts everywhere with her comic antics and powerful singing. Unfortunately, she had far less success in her personal life, and the film focuses on her doomed romance with her first husband, gambler Nicky Arnstein, played by Omar Sharif. Get tickets.

RUN WITH THE BULLS and Painter Francisco Alvarado at NoHo 7, April 25

If you haven’t done so yet, next Tuesday, April 25 will be a good time to catch RUNNING WITH THE BULLS, Art in the Arthouse’s recent exhibit at the NoHo 7 featuring the works of FRANCISCO ALVARADO.  That’s because we’ll be having a “late-show celebration” Tuesday, April 25 from 7-9pm, featuring a slide show, artist talk, and of course, the usual food and beverage treats AAH is known for.

Drawing inspiration from nature and his travels, Alvarado creates powerful works utilizing a fascinating process that combines technology and hands-on manipulation of acrylic paint, mixed media and digital imaging.  Curated by Joshua Elias, the exhibit runs through early May at the NoHo 7.

About the Exhibit:

Painting with refined Matisse-like cutout shapes, Francisco Alvarado, has a propensity towards creating movement. Overlaying forms are charged with passionate, vibrant colors that evoke the volcanic fields in his native Ecuador. Inspired from loss, a ditch of emotion wells up in his art, focused, patiently rendered, evoking a wistful empathy.

Alvarado moved from Ecuador to Glendale, CA in 1969. Psychedelic 60s painter Peter Max influenced young Francisco greatly. With Heinz Edelman’s animation in the Beatles’ film the “Yellow Submarine,” animation as a gateway to fine art began to percolate.

Inspired by the emergence of Apple Computers, he enrolled at Long Beach State to study engineering. He threw himself into the brave new world of coding and digital imaging, ultimately leading to artistic experimentation with mixed media.

When mentor Quinton Bemiller introduced him to abstract painting, Alvarado’s work took new turns, filled with vivacity and freedom and influenced by luminaries such as Picasso, Hockney, and Matta. As a mature artist, Alvarado has connected to life and painting in a fuller sense, resulting in the stunning new works currently on display.

Two Courtroom Classics For the Price of One on May 2nd in NoHo, Pasadena, and Beverly Hills

Laemmle Theatres and the Anniversary Classics Series present two acclaimed courtroom dramas celebrating their 60th anniversaries as the second attraction in the popular Twofer Tuesdays program. 12 ANGRY MEN and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, both 1957 Academy Award nominees for Best Picture, will be paired as a double bill (two movies, one admission price) on May 2nd at the Ahrya Fine Arts, NoHo 7, and Pasadena Playhouse 7. Presented on Blu-ray.

12 ANGRY MEN, about the deliberations of 12 jurors in a murder trial, was adapted by Reginald Rose from his 1954 teleplay, and directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network) as his film debut. Henry Fonda, who also produced, heads a formidable cast of award-winning actors including Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley, Jack Warden, E. G. Marshall, and Jack Klugman. Both Lumet and Rose were Oscar nominated for their work.

The film, as timely as ever, challenges an audience to confront ethnic and social prejudices in considering innocence or guilt based on reasonable doubt.

Roger Ebert called it “a masterpiece of stylized realism,” enhanced by the expert black-and-white photography of Boris Kaufman, making the most of its one set in the jury room. Ebert further opined, “In its ingenuity, in the way it balances one piece of evidence against another that seems contradictory, 12 Angry Men is as meticulous as an Agatha Christie thriller.” The movie was added to the National Film Registry in 2007.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, based on an Agatha Christie play, is a spellbinding courtroom thriller about a murder suspect (Tyrone Power) defended by a wily barrister (Charles Laughton) against the testimony of the suspect’s wife (Marlene Dietrich).

Billy Wilder, collaborating with writers Harry Kurnitz and Larry Marcus, strengthened the characterizations and added a surprise twist at the end, heightening the suspense throughout.

Laughton received one of the film’s six Oscar nominations as Best Actor for his delightfully animated portrayal. Elsa Lanchester as the barrister’s no-nonsense nurse afforded comic relief and copped a supporting actress nod. Wilder nabbed the sixth of his eight career directing nominations.

The film was a critical and commercial hit, with Bosley Crowther of The New York Times applauding “Wilder’s splendid staging of some splintering courtroom scenes and a first-rate theatrical performance by Charles Laughton.”

Audiences at the time were aghast and delighted by the film’s wicked surprise ending, which they were urged to keep secret. Even the film’s cast did not know the ending until the last day of shooting. Both films were later cited in the all-time top ten of the AFI’s Courtroom Dramas category.

The Twofer Tuesdays double feature of 12 ANGRY MEN (shows at 5:15 pm and 9:35 pm) and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (shows at 7:15 pm) plays May 2 at three Laemmle locations: Ahrya Fine Arts, NoHo 7, and Pasadena Playhouse 7.
