It doesn’t get much better than this! Sunday, August 13 LAEMMLE LIVE welcomes McCabes Guitar Shop for a free pop-up celebration of all things guitar, banjo, ukulele and harmonica. McCabe’s renowned teachers and students share their musical wit and wisdom with lively performances and demos. Hosted by Head of Music School Denny Croy at the Monica Film Center. It began in 1958. Furniture designer Gerald McCabe repaired guitars for his folk-singer wife’s musician friends who had no local music store. Gerald and his friend Ed Kahn decided to open a small music shop on Pico Blvd in Santa Monica. They began repairing instruments, selling folk music books and records, carrying Mexican guitars and old banjos. Whilst nowadays people can look at Magical Instruments to get a recommendation for a guitar, back then the options were much more limited. Still, word spread and local musicians began hanging out, relishing one of the only guitar shops in the Southern California area. One of those young musicians was Bob Riskin. Bob started as an employee in 1960. In the early 60’s lessons and classes were added. In 1969 McCabe’s began presenting live concerts. Bob Riskin became sole owner in 1986. Bob and his wife Espie are still running McCabe’s today! Over the years, musicians from all aspects of the musical spectrum, from gifted amateurs to seasoned professionals, have come to appreciate McCabe’s friendly, knowledgeable sales staff, expert repair shop and world class teaching staff. 500 YEARS: LIFE IN RESISTANCE is a brilliant new stand-alone documentary, but it’s also the third part of a trilogy by acclaimed documentarian Pamela Yates beginning with the 1983 film WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE and continuing with the 2011 follow-up GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR. We are very excited to present her earlier films in the trilogy as weekend morning screenings July 29th & 30th only at our Monica Film Center and Pasadena Playhouse 7 locations.

following the 7:10 pm showings of 500 YEARS at the Monica Film Center on Friday, 7/28 and Sunday, 7/30

All 3 films should end at the same time, and the audiences will be escorted into a single auditorium for the Q&A.

BIRTHRIGHT: A WAR STORY examines how the anti-choice movement has gained prominence and continues its work to roll back access to abortion for women in the United States. A fast-growing radical movement is leading an aggressive campaign to take control of women’s reproductive health care and to encourage states, courts and religious doctrine to govern whether, when and how women will bear children.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: ART ON ART by Robert Cenedella at Claremont 5

Art in the Arthouse revisits the works of ROBERT CENEDELLA with a new showing of his special edition silk screens entitled ART ON ART. Cenedella’s series, currently on display in Claremont until September 17, is a part of The Laemmle Collection.

About the Exhibit:
Previous works by Robert Cenedella, shown at Laemmle’s Monica Film Center along side the documentary film ART BASTARD, gave an in-depth example of what is controversial. Our current show, reveals another side of the artist. The numbered editions of silk screens on archival paper, are less political statement, more tailored etchings of clever positioning and whimsical humor. They are signed by the artist and museum framed to ensure preservation with handmade Italian frames from all natural materials.

“I am a product of starting my career circa 1959 just when all the “isms” came to be – Absract Expressionism, Abstract Illusionism, Constructivism, Minimalism, Hypermodernism, etc – and the very kind of work that I was developing under GEORGE GROSZ at the Arts Students League of New York was literally being not just looked down upon, but verbally scorned and ridiculed by art critics, art schools and the public in general.

Having fought the notion that skills were no longer necessary, in particular drawing, PROTEST, has in some ways become part of my work. This has not been intentional on my part; it just has become a fact of sorts after fifty years of having never fit into the ART ESTABLISHMENT on any level. To this day, my work continues to be considered controversial one way or another.”

Fourth Annual Tour de Laemmle is Sunday, July 23rd, 2017!

Don’t be surprised if you see Greg Laemmle and 100+ other cyclists clip-clopping through a theater lobby this Sunday. They’re just rehydrating and taking a well-deserved break in the middle of their epic 135-mile bicycle tour of all eight Laemmle venues!

Our Fourth Annual Tour de Laemmle starts bright and early this Sunday, July 23rd. Participants leave the Monica Film Center in Santa Monica at 7:00AM before making their way to Beverly Hills, Claremont, Pasadena, Glendale, NoHo, Encino, West LA, and back to Santa Monica.

Our involvement with cycling events such as CicLAvia and Climate Ride stems not just from our love of the sport, but as a way to encourage alternative transportation and inspire creative thinking about our traffic and environmental challenges. In 2014, we stepped up to the plate by creating our own event.

As an avid cyclist and sustainability advocate, Greg Laemmle had always dreamed of traveling to each of his venues by bike in a single day. After researching the route, he soon recognized the cultural and historical import of many of the roads, pathways, and landmarks he discovered along the way. About the Exhibit

The unique talents of photographer ROSE HARTMAN are celebrated in our latest Art in the Arthouse exhibit. Over the past four decades, Hartman has photographed the rich, the famous and the stylish in some of the most legendary settings of NYC nightlife, from STUDIO 54 to the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala to her pioneering work behind the scenes of 7th Ave.

These iconic and historic images are being shown in conjunction with the acclaimed documentary feature,The Incomparable Rose Hartman, by filmmaker OTIS MASS. Even now, Hartman still doesn’t let much get in the way of her shooting – whether the latest fashion show or provocative art opening. She’s been called a lot of names but “irascible” may best define the woman whose sharp eye and sharper elbows have been penetrating the world of fashion and its personalities, documenting luminaries from RALPH LAUREN to HALSTON.

Hartman’s photography has been widely exhibited in some of the most prestigious art spaces in the country including the Whitney Museum,the Museum of the City of New York, and Dia:Beacon. The artist, who turned eighty this past May, continues to work and live in New York City’s West Village neighborhood.

Join us once again at the Monica Film Center Sunday, July 23 for a fun summer twist on our chamber music series. Our July Laemmle Live concert features the fresh interplay of multiple music genres by the talented young musicians of Sound Roads Music. Students will perform original works, discuss how songwriting changed their relationship with music and present a reinvention of a Bach concerto with a swing feel.

Sound Roads Music is a collective of like-minded professional educators and students who bring quality music education to our community. With an emphasis on performance, competition and leadership, this innovative music school creates an environment for young musicians to thrive. Teaching artists welcome all who are dedicated and excited about learning music. Sound Roads Music founders and directors Tom Farrell and Reiko Nakano believe that a performance-based approach mixed with a healthy dose of competition and peer support motivates students to strive for a higher level of musicianship and understanding.

July 4th Twofer Tuesday Double Bill of THE MUSIC MAN and YANKEE DOODLE DANDY in Pasadena, NoHo, and Beverly Hills!

Laemmle Theatres and the Anniversary Classics Series present a star-spangled double feature on the 4th of July in the popular monthly Twofer Tuesdays program – the 75th anniversary of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), paired with the 55th anniversary of The Music Man (1962). Both films represent unabashed celluloid tributes to the American spirit.

And so you won’t miss fireworks, we screen the double feature (two films, one admission) as a special holiday matinee on July 4 at three locations: Ahrya Fine Arts, NoHo 7 and Pasadena Playhouse 7. Yankee Doodle Dandy at 1:00 pm; The Music Man at 3:30 pm. Presented on blu-ray.

YANKEE DOODLE DANDY is the musical biopic of Broadway showman George M. Cohan, showcasing the Oscar-winning performance of screen legend James Cagney (Best Actor). The rousing patriotic musical was released during the early months of WWII, and was designed to lift the American psyche, which it accomplished resoundingly.

The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Director (Michael Curtiz), and Supporting Actor (Walter Huston, playing Cohan’s vaudevillian father). Roger Ebert noted, “the greatness of the film rests entirely in Cagney’s performance. While he’s in full sail, as in “Give My Regards to Broadway” or “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” it’s like regarding a force of nature.” And Cohan himself, still alive at the time, is reputed to have said of Cagney’s performance, “My God, what an act to follow.”

THE MUSIC MAN is the colorful screen adaptation of Meredith Willson’s Tony-winning Broadway musical, preserving the triumphant stage performance of Robert Preston in the greatest role of his career. Pauline Kael aptly observed, “the star, Robert Preston, has a few minutes of fast patter—conmanship set to music—that constitute one of the high points in the history of American musicals.”

Critics and public alike at the height of the Cold War embraced the ebullient celebration of early twentieth-century small town Americana, and the film was a box-office smash. Produced and directed by Morton Da Costa (Auntie Mame), with Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Paul Ford, Hermione Gingold and a future Oscar-winning director, seven year old Ron Howard. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Both films feature the craftsmanship of Warner Bros. staff composer and musical arranger Ray Heindorf, who won his first Academy Award for Yankee Doodle Dandy, and his third and final Oscar for The Music Man twenty years later. Additionally, the two musicals were inducted into the National Film Registry for “historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance.” Here is a rare opportunity to see them back on the big screen.
