Laemmle’s Anniversary Classics presents THE TINGLER and THEM, a Halloween Eve Double Feature on October 30 in North Hollywood.

Laemmle Theatres and the Anniversary Classics Series present our annual scary October program of classic fright films with a double bill of 1950s black-and-white hits: the 65th anniversary of THEM! (1954), paired with the 60th anniversary of THE TINGLER (1959). The vintage horror entries will show in a retro double feature (two movies for the price of one) on Halloween Eve, Wednesday, October 30 at the Laemmle NoHo.

THEM!, considered one of the very best of the 1950s monster movies, tapped into the era’s nuclear paranoia with its tale of giant mutated ants terrorizing the American Southwest.

Unlike many of the low-budget films that capitalized on atomic era fears, THEM! was a major production for Warner Bros., hoping to repeat the commercial success of their 1952 release, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. They assigned studio contract director Gordon Douglas to helm a script written by Ted Sherdeman, Russell Hughes, and George Worthing Yates with a strong cast headed by James Whitmore, Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn (Miracle on 34th Street), James Arness, Joan Weldon and newcomer Fess Parker.

Accomplished cinematographer Sidney Hickox (The Big Sleep, White Heat) and venerable composer Bronislau Kaper (San Francisco, Lili, Mutiny on the Bounty) contributed first-rate work, along with special effects that garnered an Academy Award nomination that year.

Variety capsulized the favorable reviews: “top-notch science fiction shocker. It has a well-plotted story, expertly directed and acted in matter-of-fact style to rate a chiller payoff and thoroughly satisfy fans of hackle-raising melodrama.”

THE TINGLER is a classic of another sort – cultish camp – with its outlandish story of a doctor who discovers a fear-bred organism in the base of the spine. If released, the centipede creature’s grip can kill, only alleviated by a scream.

Producer-director William Castle, one of the period’s rival “king of the Bs,” enlisted writer Robb White to concoct the story, cited by Time Out as “ingeniously ludicrous.” Castle and White had collaborated twice before and hit box office pay dirt with the low-budget hit House on Haunted Hill in 1958. But shlockmeister Castle’s real talents were as a huckstering showman, and he provided a marketing gimmick doozy in “Percepto,” with vibrating buzzers wired to theater seats to jolt the audience when the creature is unleashed.

The good doctor, played by Vincent Price, would then instruct the theater audience to “scream for your lives” to keep the marauding tingler at bay. Price had been the star of House on Haunted Hill and then went on to become the “the master of menace” for a dueling “king of the Bs,” Roger Corman, with his adaptations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe in the early 1960s.

At the time of its release, the New York Times’ Howard Thompson dismissed THE TINGLER as a prime example of Castle “serving some of the worst, dullest little horror entries ever to snake into movie houses.”

Today audiences are mightily amused by the brand of scary mayhem Castle specialized in, endorsing Leonard Maltin’s assessment of THE TINGLER as a ”preposterous but original shocker.”

Since 2004, Elemental Music has provided over 2,000 young musicians with high-quality music education experiences. Elemental Music envisions a community where youth are inspired and empowered through quality music education. Students study with expert teachers to hone their musical technique while learning the art of collaboration and responsibility. Elemental Music offers exciting ensembles for elementary school students in nearly all instruments and voice, as well as beginning programs for guitar and strings, and even an advanced full orchestra for middle school students.

“I feel the real kind of happy in my heart!” This is the exclamation of an Elemental Music student overflowing with joy after performing in his very first orchestra concert. As a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to inspiring, training, and nurturing young musicians in Santa Monica and surrounding communities, Elemental Music teachers witness special moments like this all season long!

Please join us for a very special event as LAEMMLE LIVE presents the Street Symphony String Quartet, featuring a string quartet written by Director of Community Engagement, Ben Shirley and music by Reena Esmail.

Street Symphony places social justice at the heart of music making by creating authentic, powerful engagements between professional and emerging artists and communities disenfranchised by homelessness and incarceration in Los Angeles County. They believe all people deserve access to a creative and expressive life. Founded in 2011, Street Symphony has presented nearly 400 free, world-class musical engagements for severely disenfranchised communities affected by homelessness and incarceration in Los Angeles County. Comprised of a grassroots community of over 70 world class musicians, Street Symphony ensembles present regular monthly programs at Skid Row shelters and county jails.

Since 2015, Street Symphony has presented a yearly performance of The Messiah Project, a nationally acclaimed community performance of excerpts of Handel’s Messiah at The Midnight Mission in Skid Row, featuring stories and performances from people affected by and recovering from homelessness in LA County. In 2017, supported by a generous grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation, Street Symphony launched the Daniel Chaney Teaching Artist program, pairing professional artists with members of the homeless community in an effort to amplify the voices and artistry of the Skid Row community.

ART IN THE ARTHOUSE presents: GERARD BURKHART: NoHo & Shimmering Sky

Art in the Arthouse presents a fascinating exploration of local cityscapes and nearby landscapes in our latest art show in North Hollywood. Don’t miss photographer Gerard Burkhart’s exhibit NOHO & SHIMMERING SKY, now extended through 2020. All of the art is for sale and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Laemmle Foundation and its support of humanitarian and environmental causes in Los Angeles.

About the Exhibit
As a NoHo resident from 1999 to 2001, Photographer Gerard Burkhart viewed his neighborhood as his own personal Cuba – an island in the vast sea of Los Angeles untouched by a larger outside world, waiting to be opened. Years later, Burkhart produced Shimmering Sky as an artist-in-residence for the Mojave National Preserve Foundation, living in a canvas bell tent at Hole in the Wall Campground. Despite a government shutdown and the 2018 drought, Burkhart explored the soul nurturing inventiveness that desert isolation encourages.

States the artist, “Arguably, visual art is an indulgence of perception. We can use our interior landscape of experience to filter and decode the world we inhabit. As a photojournalist, it is a prism that sees the outside world with a critical eye for accurate and fair storytelling images. As an artist, it is a fertile realm rich with the possibilities of creation. The NoHo and Shimmering Sky projects represent a 20-year development crossing back and forth through both those territories. The North Hollywood Neighborhood Project was made with a keen eye toward community engagement with a pure photojournalistic ethic. Shimmering Sky was a near-transcendent journey struggling with the constraints and celebrations of photography’s realism. Spiritually, they both contain the same DNA.”

Burkhart’s photos have been published in Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, USA Today, the Washington Post, the New York Times and internationally through the Associated Press. He worked at the Los Angeles Times for six years where his photos were included in three collaborative Pulitzer Prize winning editions.

LAEMMLE LIVE presents: McCabe’s Guitar Shop August 4

Our summer tradition continues when our good friends from McCabe’s share their musical gifts Sunday, August 4. LAEMMLE LIVE presents McCabe’s Guitar Shop for a free pop-up celebration of all things guitar, vocal and other choice instruments. Come on down to the Monica to sample McCabe’s students and teachers’ wit and wisdom. Hosted by Head of Music School Denny Croy.

It began in 1958. Furniture designer Gerald McCabe repaired guitars for his folk-singer wife’s musician friends who had no local music store. Gerald and his friend Ed Kahn decided to open a small music shop on Pico Blvd in Santa Monica. They began repairing instruments, selling folk music books and records, carrying Mexican guitars and old banjos. Word spread and local musicians began hanging out, relishing one of the only guitar shops in the Southern California area. One of those young musicians was Bob Riskin. Bob started as an employee in 1960. In the early 60’s lessons and classes were added. In 1969 McCabe’s began presenting live concerts. Bob Riskin became sole owner in 1986. Bob and his wife Espie are still running McCabe’s today! Over the years, musicians from all aspects of the musical spectrum, from gifted amateurs to seasoned professionals, have come to appreciate McCabe’s friendly, knowledgeable sales staff, expert repair shop and world class teaching staff. Join us for memorable music from a local treasure!

Midsommar Scary Movies Every Throwback Thursday in July at the NoHo 7!

On July 2nd we open Ari Aster’s (HEREDITARY) latest horror film MIDSOMMAR in Pasadena, Claremont, North Hollywood, and Glendale. In it an American couple discovers the horrors of a small Swedish village’s Midsommar festival held once every 90 years. We invite you to discover some midsummer scares of our own this July in North Hollywood!

About the exhibit
JOYCE ELIAS: Living near Lake Michigan in an area known for sultry skies and dreary days, one might expect Joyce Elias to express her work in various shades of gray. Most mornings, Elias travels to the edge of that lake and photographs the waters and moody heavens that surround it.“The connection between art and nature intrigues me,” says Elias. In this series, “limiting the size and shapes in the works allows me more freedom to experiment with the unusual color combinations found in the natural world”.

Color bounds out of her evenly painted tempera works – flat, rounded forms gyrate as they intersect the plane. Influenced by Josef Albers and Sonia Delaunay, artists who deeply explored color from 1900 to the late 1970s, Elias’ nuanced shades dance between semi-circle shapes. Color is a funny thing; it grabs us in the darkest of times. The artist’s choice of language is born out of tone and vibration. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Elias later earned a teaching degree at the School of Art Institute in Chicago

BEA HUSMAN: Fellow Chicagoan, Bea Husman uses a language that stems from texture, tone and archaeology. An iconoclast inspired by her world travels, she created cultured works where color acts as a ploy and texture creates dimension, even within a silkscreen print. Husman remained productive until her last days at 96 years of age.
