Happy New Year! Enjoy the Beginning of 2018 by Seeing All the Shortlisted Foreign Language Oscar Nominees on the Big Screen.
This year intrepid moviegoers will have a chance to see every one of the shortlisted foreign films in theaters. The Academy received submissions from around the world, 92 nations in all, and has whittled them down to these lucky nine. (Anne Thompson of Indiewire has a good breakdown about the snubs and surprises here.)
We open the Hungarian drama ON BODY AND SOUL this Friday at the Music Hall. We’ve been playing the hit Swedish comedy THE SQUARE since November. We have Fatih Akin’s IN THE FADE (Germany), starring a fierce Diane Kruger, right now at the Royal and starting Friday at the Playhouse and Town Center. (We’ll also host Mr. Akin in person for a Q&A at the Royal this Friday.) The following weekend we’ll open THE INSULT (Lebanon), and bring back FELICITE (Senegal) and THE WOUND (South Africa). We’ll have Russia’s LOVELESS in February and Israel’s FOXTROT in early March. We don’t yet have FANTASTIC WOMAN (Chile) dated but most likely will soon. Travel the world via movie theater seat. LAEMMLE LIVE presents: Elemental Choir Dec 3

Join us December 3 at the Monica Film Center as we usher in the winter holidays with the joyful sounds of ELEMENTAL CHOIR.
The choir is a program of Elemental Music, created to inspire, train, and nurture young musicians in Santa Monica. The program began in 2004 by an SMMUSD music teacher who wanted to create an opportunity for elementary students to play in an orchestra throughout the school year, make new friends, and get excited about music. Since then, more than 1,000 students have participated in Elemental Music. Initially serving only 25 elementary school students, programs now serve nearly 300 elementary and middle school students in seven different programs this season.
Elemental Choir is one of Elemental Music’s newest and fastest growing programs. The Choir is comprised of third, fourth and fifth grade auditioned singers from over ten different Westside elementary schools. Teachers in the community recognize that engaging staff and inspiring repertoire choices help foster a strong sense of identity in young musicians. Our students work with expert teaching artists to polish their technical skills and dig into the joys of music-making, all in a social setting. We offer many opportunities for student performances throughout the year at three different Elemental concerts plus various public events in the Santa Monica community. Elemental Music’s young musicians blossom in their own ways, both socially and musically. This vibrant program inspires a love of music in the hearts of some of the westside’s youngest artists.

About the Film:
Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980’s, he was thrust into public consciousness thanks to his brash personality and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man.
Director Neil Berkeley’s “Gilbert” reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character.
