Special Screenings of THE NANCE with Nathan Lane on July 14

July 3, 2014 by Lamb L.

On July 14 we will have one-time screenings of the Broadway play THE NANCE, with Nathan Lane, at the Royal, Playhouse and NoHo. From today’s Playbill:

“Douglas Carter Beane‘s 2013 drama The Nance, which was produced by Lincoln Center Theater and starred two-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane, will be seen in more than 300 movie theatres in the U.S. and Canada this summer.”

“In The Nance, according to press notes, playwright Douglas Carter Beane “tells the story of Chauncey Miles (Nathan Lane), a headline nance performer in the twilight of New York burlesque’s era. Integrating burlesque sketches into his drama, Beane paints the portrait of a homosexual man living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930’s New York, whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his messy offstage life.”

Bicycling Cinephiles! Bike L.A. with Greg Laemmle on the TOUR DE LAEMMLE

June 11, 2014 by Lamb L.

L.A.’s premiere destination for independent film, LAEMMLE THEATRES, is excited to announce the first-ever TOUR DE LAEMMLE.  Theatre owner and cycling advocate GREG LAEMMLE will be riding his TERN commuter bicycle (AKA, “The Pirate Ninja”) to all seven Laemmle locations SATURDAY, JUNE 21.  And he’s inviting the public to pedal with him!

Laemmle Theatres President Greg Laemmle

The TOUR is FREE to all participants. Riders may join Greg for the entire route, which starts at the ROYAL THEATRE in West L.A. at 6 AM, or for one or more of the ensuing legs. The full circuit (which returns to the Royal in the early evening) will cover 124 miles throughout the L.A. region including Santa Monica, Claremont, Beverly Hills and Encino at its most outward points.  See below for more route details.

Greg will be GIVING AWAY his “Pirate Ninja” bicycle to the grand prize winner of the TOUR SWEEPSTAKES! (see details below).  In addition, the FIRST 50 people who register for the Tour at www.Laemmle.com/Tour will receive a FREE Laemmle  T-SHIRT.  Plus, ALL REGISTRANTS will receive a FREE Laemmle History Book, which commemorates three generations of family ownership and a 75-year legacy of contributing to cultural life of Los Angeles.

The TERN Pirate Ninja Grand Prize

At each theatre stop, cyclists can refuel with refreshments provided by the theatre and from the Tour’s sponsors including KIND BAR, O.N.E. COCONUT WATER, and others TBD.

The Tour celebrates the launch of Laemmle’s first BIKE CORRAL.  The corral is part of a pilot program by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) Bike Program, where the City partners with a local business to provide on-street bicycle parking.  The corral will be installed on LANKERSHIM BLVD. near the entrance of the NOHO 7, the chain’s acclaimed venue in the heart of the North Hollywood Arts District. Joining us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be L.A. Councilman and Metro Board Member PAUL KREKORIAN.

This new bike parking in combination with close proximity to the North Hollywood Metro station (just up the street), puts NoHo 7 on the cutting edge of accessibility for Angeleno movie-goers.  Further, it underscores Laemmle’s commitment (via its business operations and charitable foundation) to give back to its patrons and make L.A. truly a more livable and sustainable place for all residents.

The first 200 cyclists who use the new corral will receive a $2 DISCOUNT for any regularly priced NoHo 7 movie ticket AND will receive a FREE HEALTHY TREAT courtesy of KIND BAR.

In addition, one lucky person who enters the Tour de Laemmle Sweepstakes will pedal away with the top prize – the very same, high-end, Eclipse X20 TERN folding bicycle Greg will be riding that day! Known as the “PIRATE NINJA” this is one of TERN’s top-end models. It lists new at $2200!  This particular bike was recently given to Greg to use for CLIMATE RIDE 2104 (www.ClimateRide.org), a four-day, 250-mile charity ride in Northern California which took place last month.  Other sweepstakes prizes include Laemmle 75TH ANNIVERSARY merchandise, MOVIE PASSES, and more!

FREE MOVIE SCREENINGS
For cyclists and non-cyclists wishing to participate in Tour de Laemmle, the company is offering two free, BICYCLE THEMED MOVIE SCREENINGS open to the general public.  These will include the cycling classic “BREAKING AWAY”, and the much loved “PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE.” Both films are family friendly.  Screenings will take place the morning of the Tour at both the Claremont 5 (“BREAKING AWAY”) and NoHo 7 (“PEE WEE”).  The latter will be timed so that those attending the screening can also be present for the Bike Corral Ribbon Cutting just after the movie lets out.  More details TBD.

PARTNERSHIP WITH L.A. RIVER RIDE
The Tour de Laemmle occurs one day prior to the LACBC’s (Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition) annual L.A. RIVER RIDE.  L.A. River Riders are encouraged to use one or more legs of Tour de Laemmle as a tune-up. Greg Laemmle, who is a board member of LACBC, will himself be riding the next day. Moreover, Greg just returned from captaining TEAM LACBC at the recent CLIMATE RIDE CALIFORNIA.

The team raised over $70,000 for sustainable transit. All who wish to support the GROWTH OF SAFE CYCLING in L.A. are encouraged to donate to Greg’s River Ride fundraising campaign.

LEG #5
Per “Advisory” below, Greg will be riding at a relatively fast pace.  However, he is inviting more moderately skilled cyclists and families to ride with him on LEG#5 –  North Hollywood to Encino (LEG #5). This portion will feature riding along the protected Metro Orange Line Bike path at a significantly reduced speed.  Joining him on LEG #5 will be his wife and Laemmle Foundation Board Member, TISH LAEMMLE, and his father BOB LAEMMLE, who is the second-generation owner of Laemmle Theatres.  LEG #5 departs from the NoHo 7 Theatre at 3:00pm.

ADVISORY
Tour de Laemmle is not a “supported ride.”  Riders ride at their own risk. With the exception of LEG #5 (North Hollywood to Encino), it is recommended for experienced riders only!  For those wanting to keep up with Greg, he will be riding at an approximately 15 MPH clip and will NOT be stopping between theaters.

WHAT IS PROVIDED

–  Route Slips & Departure Schedule

A WORD FROM GREG LAEMMLE

‘The Tour de Laemmle is a great opportunity for L.A. cyclists and the general public to support sustainable transit in our city.  With measures like the new corral at NoHo 7 and situating new theaters adjacent to public transport, we’re hoping to make it easier for movie-goers to get out of their cars and make healthier, more cost-efficient transportation choices.  I personally look forward to riding and celebrating with you Sat. June 21!”

May 8, 2014 by Lamb L.

Laemmle is once again proud to be a sponsor of EAT SEE HEAR, one of L.A.’s premiere outdoor entertainment series.  As its name suggests, Eat See Hear offers a unique trifecta of classic movies, live music, and gourmet food trucks to create a distinctive summer experience. With entry as low as $10, it’s also a uniquely affordable option for families and all those hoping to squeeze the most out of their entertainment dollar. Events occur every Saturday night at various venues across the city from May 10 to Sept. 13.

The 2014 edition of Eat See Hear begins this Saturday, May 10 at the Greek Amphitheater at SANTA MONICA HIGH with the indie cult romance, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, starring the lovestruck Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as the object of his affections. The night also features a musical performance by VERDE DERDE, an indie-rock trio whose melodic soundscapes have earned comparisons to Radiohead and Sonic Youth by local critics. And, of course, there will be usual ESH Food Truck Caravan to cater to whatever you’re stomach is craving. The door opens at 5:30 PM, with music starting at 7 and the movie scheduled for 8:30.

Upcoming events include OFFICE SPACE at Santa Monica High (May 17), THE BIG LEBOWSKI at Griffith Park (May 24), NAPOLEON DYNAMITE at Paul Revere Middle School (May 31) and RUSHMORE at Griffith Park (June 7). Greg Laemmle to Host the Opening Night of LAST REMAINING SEATS featuring “The Lady Eve” (1941)

May 1, 2014 by Lamb L.

It’s nearly time for Last Remaining Seats, the always-compelling series of film classics presented by the L.A. CONSERVANCY in our city’s grand, vintage movie palaces. The program opens this year on June 11, 2014, 8pm with the iconic comedy THE LADY EVE (1941, Preston Sturges) at the downtown LOS ANGELES THEATRE. What’s more, the evening will be hosted by our own GREG LAEMMLE who will be in conversation with PRESTON STURGES JR. and TOM STURGES, sons of the legendary director. It promises to be a captivating evening and we invite you to join in our support of the L.A. Conservancy by attending. If you haven’t been to the lavish LOS ANGELES THEATRE on Broadway, you are sure to be astonished.

Tickets for this event and other screenings are available through the L.A. CONSERVANCY who produces the series as a way to highlight the treasure trove of beautiful and historically significant theaters that remain in our city. In addition to the Los Angeles Theatre, this year’s line up includes the PALACE THEATRE (The Great Madcap), ORPHEUM THEATRE (Citizen Kane, Footlight Parade), the THEATRE AT ACE HOTEL (Back to the Future), and the DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION (West Side Story).

Tickets are pre-sold to Conservancy members, but are now also available to the general public. Seating is limited, however, so you must act quickly. We’ve already learned that one of the screenings has been sold out.  GO HERE for more program and ticketing info.

———————————–
Program notes from the Conservancy:

The Los Angeles Conservancy has assembled an esteemed slate of special guests for its twenty-eighth season of Last Remaining Seats. This annual series presents classic films as they were meant to be seen: on the big screen, in a beautiful historic theatre, surrounded by fellow fans. Each event in the series is full of extras, including live entertainment, special guests, cartoons, and more. What began in 1987 as a way to draw attention to Los Angeles’ historic theatres is now a summer tradition, drawing thousands of people from the region, the nation, and outside the U.S.

While subject to change, the special guests and live entertainment for 2014 are outlined below.

The season kicks off June 11 with a screening of The Lady Eve at the Los Angeles Theatre. Evening host for opening night is Greg Laemmle, president of Laemmle Theatres. Laemmle will interview Preston Sturges, Jr. and Tom Sturges, sons of Preston Sturges, who wrote and directed the acclaimed 1941 comedy.

On June 14, West Side Story at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion will feature one of the film’s stars, George Chakiris, in conversation with dance critic Debra Levine. Chakiris won an Academy Award® for his performance as Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, in this classic 1961 musical.

Guests at 1933’s Footlight Parade at the Orpheum Theatre on June 18 will enjoy two live performances. Robert Salisbury will perform on the theatre’s 1928 Mighty Wurlitzer organ, followed by Maxwell DeMille Presents “The Lullaby of Broadway:” A Tribute to the 1930s Movie Music of Harry Warren and Al Dubin, with Dean Mora and his Orchestra.

Renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin will host the sold-old evening screening of Back to the Future at The Theatre at Ace Hotel on June 21. Maltin will interview cast members Lea Thompson, Claudia Wells, and Don Fullilove. A DeLorean Time Machine will make a special appearance at both the matinee and evening screenings.

Co-presented with the Latin American Cinemateca of Los Angeles, the screening of Luis Buñuel’s El gran calavera (The Great Madcap) on June 25 will be hosted by Oscar Arce, director of the Luis Buñuel Film Institute. Arce will appear on stage before the film with special guest Pablo Ferro, award-winning film title designer.

The season ends June 28 with two screenings of Citizen Kane at the Orpheum Theatre. Both screenings will be preceded by a live performance by Tony Wilson on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. The matinee will be hosted by author and film historian Alan K. Rode, with the evening screening hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, weekend daytime host of Turner Classic Movies and the grandson of the film’s co-writer with Orson Welles, Herman J. Mankiewicz.

Details and tickets are available at laconservancy.org.

Tickets cost $16 for L.A. Conservancy members and $20 for the general public.

BEA HUSMAN: BEATIFICA Comes to NoHo 7

February 21, 2014 by Lamb L.

Join us for the NoHo 7’s first art gallery opening and the second installment of Laemmle’s ART IN THE ARTHOUSE program!  At select Laemmle Theatre locations, you’ll soon be enjoying fine works by visual artists in our lobbies and on your way to the auditorium.

BEA HUSMAN: BEATIFICA opens this coming Wednesday, February 26, 6-9pm.  To join us for the opening celebration, RSVP HERE.

This extraordinary exhibit uncovers the work of BEA HUSMAN (1915-2011), an iconoclast who translated her world travels into inspired artworks in a variety of media. Rarely exhibited during her lifetime, Husman produced art for the sheer pleasure of it, resulting in a legacy unsullied by the marketplace and a body of work that exudes joy and lyricism.

Husman, a fashion designer turned artist, discovered the Intaglio process in the 1970s and soon a printing press and metal plates for etching and engraving became part of her studio, alongside large easel, oil, and acrylic paints. In turn, this led to an interest in paper-making, and, circa 1980, Husman made her way to Kyoto, Japan for a paper-making class with DAVID HOCKNEY. Upon her return, she began utilizing both paper and print making disciplines to create breathtaking collage pieces that incorporated fabrics, string, torn sections of prints, found objects, and coarse, handmade papers.

As she matured as an artist, Husman exhibited an uncanny ability to weave together her myriad influences, including explorations of remote cultures, to create pieces of increasing sophistication.  She died in 2011 at 96. leaving  a treasure trove of never-before-seen work for the public to discover.

About ART IN THE ARTHOUSE:

Art in the Arthouse is the brainchild of Laemmle president, Greg Laemmle. Switching to digital poster frames conserves both paper and wall space, creating the opportunity to extend the cultural scope of our theaters to include the visual fine arts.

By reclaiming wall space throughout our theaters for the display of fine art, patrons will have a chance to bond with notable and emerging L.A. based visual artists and their work. Proceeds from the sale of art benefit the activities of the Laemmle Charitable Foundation.

Two Advance Screenings of AMERICAN HUSTLE: Tickets Now on Sale

December 3, 2013 by Lamb L.

Earlier today the New York Film Critics Circle announced their 2013 honorees and David O. Russell’s AMERICAN HUSTLE won Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. The film opens wide on December 18 but you can be among the first to see the film on December 10 at the Royal or NoHo. We’re big fans of Mr. Russell’s from Flirting with Disaster to I [Heart] Huckabees to The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook and his latest is just as fabulously entertaining as his earlier movies.

Here’s a synopsis: A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, AMERICAN HUSTLE tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). Like David O. Russell’s previous films, AMERICAN HUSTLE defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes. Jennifer Lawrence co-stars.

Our AMERICAN HUSTLE at our Royal and NoHo 7 theaters on Tuesday, December 10 are part of the New York Film Critics Series, and will feature a pre-recorded Q&A with the filmmaker moderated by More Magazine film critic Allison Bailes. Buy tickets for the Royal screening here and the NoHo screening here.
