Join Laemmle for Tour de Summer Camps on Oct. 28 and Earn Free Movies + Private Screening

September 22, 2018 by Marc H

This fall Laemmle is going to camp!  No, we’re not scheduling a “campy film” retrospective for our Throwback Thursday series  (though that might be a good idea!).  We’re going to an actual camp (Camp Alonim in Simi Valley to be precise) Oct. 28 to participate in the 5th annual Tour de Summer Camps, a charity bicycle ride that generates scholarship funding for 13 L.A. area Jewish summer camps.  The idea is to provide any youngster who wants to attend summer camp the means to do so. What’s not to love about that?

Here’s the best part: you can join us! That includes our very own Greg Laemmle, his wife Tish, and Laemmle V.P. and family member Jay Reisbaum – all proud products of local Jewish camps who made sure their kids got to experience the magic of camp for themselves!  Now, they’re riding on Oct. 28th to ensure that the next generation is afforded the same opportunity, regardless of financial status.

If riding isn’t your thing but you’d like to support Team Laemmle and the kids who’ll benefit,  CLICK HERE.  Thank you!

For more active participation, Team Laemmle is now forming and we’re accepting all comers at all levels to ride with Greg & co. The hardcore among us can opt for the century or metric century, while the less ambitious can opt for 36 or 18-mile routes. Mash the pedals or head out for a Sunday cruise. Either way, you’ll find like-minded spirits coming together for a day of fun, challenge, camaraderie, and natural beauty. All in the name of a great cause.

It gets better still. When you join Team Laemmle you’ll be eligible for perks that will appeal to both your cycling and movie-loving sides. For starters, if you’re a first-time TDSC (Tour de Summer Camps) participant, we’ll cover your entire registration fee (a $45-$55 value). If you’re a returning TDSC rider, we’ll provide you with code for $10 off.  Contact Marc Horwitz for Team Laemmle sign-up instructions and promo codes.

If you’re one of the first 18 members to join us, we’ll seed your fundraising account with $100.  This will give you a jump start on the $500 suggested minimum. Then it’s up to you to hit up your network. We’ll be there throughout to support you with ideas and incentives. Plus, there’ll be free team training rides in the lead up to the event.

Now … what about those fundraising incentives?

At $180, get a pair of Laemmle movie passes and free popcorn coupon, good at any of our nine neighborhood locations. That’s right, all you need to do is raise 80 bucks (when we supply the first $100) to earn your passes!

At $300, get a second pair of movie passes.

At $500, get a third pair of passes and a custom-designed Laemmle cycling jersey (post-event).

At $700, get a Laemmle Premiere Card with $100 to spend on movies and concessions (this replaces prior movie passes earned).

At $1000, keep your Premiere Card AND book a night in The Lamb’s Den, Laemmle’s swanky West L.A. 13-seat private screening room ($300 value).

Well, what do you say – let’s hop on our bikes, earn some great free stuff, and help us look after the next generation of movie-goers.  No-brainer, right?

Questions?  Don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Enjoy a Car-Free Day Exploring the Gold Line from South Pasadena to Azusa at 626 GOLDEN STREETS on June 26th

June 16, 2016 by Lamb L.

626-logoExplore the San Gabriel Valley and celebrate the opening of the Foothill Gold Line extension at 626 Golden Streets, a car-free event on Sunday, June 26th from 8am to 2pm!

Modeled after other “open streets” programs like CicLAvia, 626 Golden Streets will temporarily open stretches of roadway from South Pasadena to Azusa for people to walk, jog, skate, bike, and more.

Communities participating include South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, and Azusa. Speaking of Azusa, head one block south of Azusa Downtown Station and you’ll find the future home of a Laemmle theater in Azusa! It’s the lot at the southeast corner of East Foothill Boulevard and North Azusa Avenue.

Seek out Activity Hubs along the 18+ mile route for free fitness classes (Zumba, yoga), activity booths, live music, food trucks, professional chalk artists, drum circles, cyclocross, Gabe the Sasquatch, and more!

626-yoga

Seven Tips for Enjoying 626 Golden Streets:

  1. Golden Streets is a FREE event! But bring at least a few dollars to patronize local businesses, sample some of the SGV’s food, drink, and ride the Foothill Gold Line.
  2. YOU get to decide where you start and finish.
  3. All forms of non-motorized transportation are permitted. So if you’re thinking you’re about to look at what’s the best electric skateboards suitable for long-distance, have a think about bringing your old skateboard just for this instead!
  4. Golden Streets is NOT a race. There are no finisher medals or awards. Only smiles and miles of open streets.
  5. Share the road. Please exercise caution so everyone can have a safe, enjoyable day.
  6. Gold Line Station Activity Hubs will remain open until at least 3pm (South Pasadena hub to 4pm).
  7. Don’t forget to stop, enjoy, and take a picture! Share your best snapshots on social media with the hashtag #626GoldenStreets for a chance to win special one-time-only Golden Streets swag!

June 3, 2016 by Lamb L.

UPDATE (6/6/16 at 11PM): The Azusa City Council voted 5-0 in favor of moving forward with our proposal for Block 36 in Downtown Azusa at the southeast corner of Azusa Avenue and Foothill Boulevard! We couldn’t have done it without the support of Azusa’s passionate and determined residents. Thank you!

Follow Laemmle Azusa on Facebook and on Twitter @LaemmleAzusa!

Amazing news everyone! The Azusa City Council is reconsidering the Laemmle Theatre Mixed-Use project for Block 36 at the upcoming Council meeting on Monday, June 6th at 7 pm!

The amount of support we’ve received from Azusa’s passionate arthouse audience is humbling. Thank you.

We also want to thank the council members. It takes courage and strength to reconsider a previous decision.  We applaud the council for taking these steps.

We still need community support at the meeting! All speakers should arrive before 7PM to sign the blue speaker card.

Location: 213 E. Foothill Blvd., Azusa, CA 91702 (map)
Date: Monday, June 6th, 2016
Time: 7PM

The City Council will vote on an action to “CONSIDER AMENDMENT TO PRIOR DIRECTION REGARDING DEVELOPMENT ON BLOCK 36 LOCATED AT SOUTHEAST CORNER OF AZUSA AVENUE AND FOOTHILL BOULEVARD TO DIRECT STAFF TO NEGOTIATE EXCLUSIVE NEGOTIATING AGREEMENTS WITH BOTH CHARLES COMPANY AND SERRANO DEVELOPMENT GROUP FOR BLOCK 36 AND OTHER CITY OWNED PROPERTIES”. Refer to the Agenda Item D http://www.ci.azusa.ca.us/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/4157

San Gabriel Valley: Voice Your Support for Laemmle at the Azusa City Council Vote on Monday, 5/16 at 7:30PM

May 6, 2016 by Lamb L.

UPDATE 6/3/2016: Azusa City Council to RECONSIDER the Laemmle Theatre Mixed-Use project for Block 36 on Monday, June 6th at 7PM! Click here for details.

ONE FINAL UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Azusa City Council did NOT select our project for Downtown Azusa.

Sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to speak and email. The overwhelming display of public support at the council meeting warmed our little lamb hearts. We appreciate all of you.

On Monday, May 16th at 7:30PM the Azusa City Council is scheduled to vote on our proposal to build a new movie theater in Downtown Azusa and we hope you’ll support us by speaking at the meeting! Skip to meeting details.

The proposed “Laemmle Theatre Mixed-Use Project” includes a five screen, 300 seat movie theater (with programming similar to our Pasadena venue), 108 apartment units, retail/restaurant space, an above ground parking garage, and an outdoor plaza. Our project would occupy “Block 36” at the southeast corner of East Foothill Boulevard and North Azusa Avenue in Downtown Azusa.

City Council will choose between our project and a competing project that includes a bowling alley instead of a movie theater. Some of the competitive bowling players are definitely up for that, they’ve been researching ‘best bowling ball for a stroker‘ so they get themselves to the top of the leaderboard (that hasn’t even been built yet!). There has been a lot of talk on both sides, so we are in two minds about whether to choose the bowling alley or the bright lights of a Laemmle theater!

A new Laemmle theater in Azusa would operate in addition to our existing Pasadena and Claremont venues allowing us to bring more independent, foreign, and documentary films to audiences in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley areas.

Fans of more mainstream films needn’t worry. You’ll still be able to catch big Hollywood movies like CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR at the nearby Foothill 10 operated by Regency Theatres. We’ll focus on indie and art film. We think there’s enough room for BOTH our theaters to thrive.

Here’s the important part: Public support for the project at this City Council meeting is critical. You can help by attending. Supporters wishing to speak must arrive before 7:30pm to fill out and submit a Blue Card.

The Azusa City Council meeting is scheduled for 7:30pm on Monday, May 16th:

Azusa City Auditorium
213 East Foothill Boulevard,
Azusa, CA 91702 (map)

If you can’t attend, you can still help by emailing Azusa Council Members in advance so they have written evidence that the community supports this project. Please email council members before May 16th. Include City Manager Troy Butzlaff in all correspondence to ensure your support is noted in the official record.

Here are their email addresses:

City Manager Troy Butzlaff – tbutzlaff@ci.azusa.ca.us

Mayor Joseph Romero Rocha – jrocha@ci.azusa.ca.us
Mayor Pro Tem Angel A. Carrillo – acarrillo@ci.azusa.ca.us
Council Member Edward J. Alvarez – ealvarez@ci.azusa.ca.us
Council Member Robert Gonzales – robertgonzales@ci.azusa.ca.us
Council Member Uriel E. Macias – umacias@ci.azusa.ca.us

Please share this post with any other community members interested in voicing their opinion on this exciting project!

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

LAEMMLE fans: Would you like to see a new Laemmle theater in Azusa?!

azusaUPDATE: On Monday, May 16th at 7:30PM the Azusa City Council is scheduled to vote on our proposal to build a new movie theater in Downtown Azusa and we hope you’ll support us by speaking at the meeting! Click here for details.

Our proposal to build a movie theater in Downtown Azusa has been selected as a finalist by the Azusa City Council!

In November, the City of Azusa requested proposals for a mixed use development opportunity on the southeast corner of East Foothill Boulevard and North Azusa Avenue in Downtown Azusa (referred to as “Block 36”). Our project was selected as one of two finalists in this process!

Our proposal includes a five screen movie theater (with programming similar to our Pasadena venue), 108 residential units, retail/restaurant space, and an outdoor plaza. It is estimated that our theater will draw approximately 75,000 people per year to Downtown Azusa.

Public support and outreach for the project and at upcoming City Council meetings is critical. You can help by emailing Azusa Councilmembers in advance so they have written evidence that the community supports this project. Please email them before their next meeting on May 2nd. Here are their email addresses:
