Massive Airfare Savings: Tour Special Exhibits by the World’s Great Museums at Your Local Movie Theater

December 4, 2014 by Lamb Laemmle Leave a Comment

Our Culture Vulture screening series features opera and ballet from the great houses of Europe and Shakespeare productions from the Globe in London and, beginning this Monday and Tuesday, our first art exhibit. For the very first time, Ultra HD 4K film cameras have been allowed inside the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, bringing never-before-seen art to your local Laemmle just in time for the holiday season. THE VATICAN MUSEUMS is a mega-production by a team of 40 professionals who traveled hundreds of miles in the cultural setting of the Vatican Museums while filming some of the most rare and precious works of art in the world, spanning all civilizations and epochs. Screenings are at all Laemmle venues this Monday at 7:30 PM and Tuesday at 1 PM. Other exhibits coming up on our Culture Vulture schedule include THE HERMITAGE REVEALED from Saint Petersburg on January 26 and 27; POMPEII from the British Museum on February 16 and 17; and VIKINGS: LIFE & LEGEND March 9 and 10.

CicLAvia Comes to South L.A. this Sunday

December 4, 2014 by Lamb Laemmle Leave a Comment

The best way to experience a city is on foot or bicycle and this Sunday CicLAvia, the walking/biking event, returns, closes a generous stretch of roads to cars, and opens up another part of our giant city for leisurely exploration. For the first time, the area in question is South L.A. From CicLAvia.org:

“CicLAvia makes its first journey to South L.A. on December 7. The South L.A. route will connect beautiful Leimert Park with historic Central Avenue, traveling along Martin Luther King Boulevard. Participants will be able to enjoy the sights, music, food and culture that makes South L.A. such a vibrant part of Los Angeles.” So whether you hoof it, bike it, run it, scoot it, skate it or [fill in the non-motorized blank] it, the weather is supposed to be pleasant, so enjoy it.

MONK WITH A CAMERA Q&A’s Opening Weekend at the Royal

December 1, 2014 by Lamb Laemmle Leave a Comment

MONK WITH A CAMERA chronicles the life and spiritual quest of Nicholas (Nicky) Vreeland, who for the past twenty-eight years has been a Tibetan Buddhist monk. The son of a United States Ambassador, grandson of legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, and a photographer by trade, Nicky left his privileged life behind to follow his true calling. He moved to India, cutting his ties with society, photography, and his pleasure-filled world, to live in a monastery with no running water or electricity.

MONK WITH A CAMERA filmmakers Tina Mascara and Guido Santi will participate in Q&A’s at the Royal after the 2:55, 5:20 and 7:45 PM screenings Friday through Sunday, December 12-14. The film’s subject, Nicky Vreeland, will join them for the Friday screenings.

30th Annual Spirit Award Nominees Announced; Indiewire on How Film Independent Went “Off the Rails” (in a Good Way) with their Choices; John Waters Mouths “Happy Birthday”

November 26, 2014 by Lamb Laemmle Leave a Comment

The Spirit Awards turn 30 next February 21, and lots of the film we’ve shown, are showing or will show are up for shiny hardware. BIRDMAN and BOYHOOD are the worthy nominees with the most nods, but other terrific, startlingly original films you can see at Laemmle Theatres include CITIZENFOUR, MOMMY, WHIPLASH, SELMA, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT and more. John Waters, a frequent host of the proceedings, calls it his “kind of crowd…sexually confused…and financially challenged.” Here are his birthday wishes for Spirit Awards:

Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson of Indiewire are pleased with Film Independent’s Choices, which they think are a return to the organization’s non-conformist roots. (Last year the Spirit Awards and Oscars were carbon copies of each other in most of the major categories.) Listen to their conversation.

Big Fundraising Push for a Wildlife Corridor Across the 101 in Agoura: Let’s All Help Our Cougars and Other SoCal Megafauna

November 26, 2014 by Lamb Laemmle Leave a Comment

There are many amazing things about Southern California and one of them is the fact that we live in incredibly close proximity to serious megafauna like mountain lions, dolphins and bears. Even though Los Angeles and the surrounding communities constitute one of the world’s greatest megalopolises, creatures like cougars have managed to cope and survive. Freeways are a major problem however. For years wildlife activists and transportation officials have been lobbying for strategically located wildlife corridors to help animals safely cross the freeways that crisscross their habitat. Now the National Wildlife Federation is ramping up efforts to build the first such crossing, which are key to these magnificent animals’ survival. Click here to learn more, get involved and donate, and click here to see a brief but awesome video of a family of cougars filmed in the mountains above Glendora just last month.
