UNCERTAIN TERMS Filmmakers in Person at the Music Hall this Weekend

June 2, 2015 by Lamb L.

We’ll be opening UNCERTAIN TERMS, the terrific new film from rising American independent director Nathan Silver this Friday at the Music Hall. The story follows Robbie (David Dahlbom), who, after catching his wife with another guy, flees Brooklyn for the countryside to stay with his neurotic aunt. She runs a home for pregnant teenagers and as the only man in the house, Robbie inadvertently becomes the object of the girls’ attention… and affection. He eventually meets Nina, (India Menuez) who is mature beyond her age and struggling with relationship troubles of her own. The more Robbie and Nina get to know each other, the more “complicated” their friendship becomes. In his Village Voice review, Alan Scherstuhl described UNCERTAIN TERMS as “brisk, brief, well acted, smartly crafted, and shrewdly judged…[the director] does nothing less than put on the screen life as it’s lived.”

UNCERTAIN TERMS writer-producer Chloe Domont and producer Josh Mandel will introduce the 10 PM screenings at the Music Hall on Friday and Saturday, June 5 and 6.

THE HUNTING GROUND “a Must-Watch Work of Cine-Activism” about Rape on U.S. Campuses

March 3, 2015 by Lamb L.

Los Angeles documentarian Kirby Dick makes terrific films that brilliantly explore the most urgent issues of our time, whether child abuse in the Catholic Church (the Oscar-nominated Twist of Faith); sexual assault in the U.S. military (The Invisible War, also Oscar nominated); and the hypocrisy of the MPAA’s rating system (This Film is Not Yet Rated). His latest is THE HUNTING GROUND, a startling exposé of rape crimes on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll on victims and their families. Weaving together verité footage and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education while fighting for justice – despite harsh retaliation, harassment and push-back at every level. Leading film critic Manohla Dargis of the New York Times calls it “a must-watch work of cine-activism, one that should be seen by anyone headed to college and by those already on campus.” Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News calls it “Kirby Dick’s important documentary.” We are very pleased to open THE HUNTING GROUND on Friday, March 13th at our Pasadena theater and one week later at our Claremont location.

Village Voice 2014 Film Poll and Greg Laemmle’s Top Ten So Far

December 30, 2014 by Lamb L.

Each year the Village Voice polls nearly 100 American film critics on 13 categories to find the best (and worst) of the year in film. BOYHOOD (now playing in Beverly Hills and Pasadena) captured the top spot in the best film category with UNDER THE SKIN and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL following not-too-closely behind.

Best documentary film went to CITIZENFOUR, which you can still catch at our Royal Theater in West LA. Marion Cotillard earned best actress honors for her performances in THE IMMIGRANT and TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT. Jake Gyllenhaal was voted best actor for NIGHTCRAWLER which is now playing in Beverly Hills, Encino, and Pasadena.

You can find the results in all categories including ‘Movie Everyone is Wrong About’ over at http://www.villagevoice.com/filmpoll/.

Greg Laemmle compiled his own top ten list but he says it’s important to note that he has not gotten around (yet) to seeing such critically acclaimed films as FINDING VIVIAN MAIER, BOYHOOD, NIGHTCRAWLER, CITIZENFOUR and WHIPLASH. Plus, there are also several year-end films that he still needs to catch. Among those would be THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, MR. TURNER, LEVIATHAN and SELMA. Here’s his list, which he reserves the right to completely change… or not:

1.)  BIRDMAN
2.)  FORCE MAJEURE
3.)  IDA
4.)  GONE GIRL
5.)  THE ONE I LOVE
6.)  THE LUNCHBOX
7.)  THE SKELETON TWINS
8.)  ART & CRAFT
9.)  1,000 TIMES GOOD NIGHT
10.)  CHEF

Share your own top ten list in the comments!

Greg Laemmle on NPR: “We…see some real problems in the idea that someone lurking in the shadows can shut down the release of material they don’t like.” THE INTERVIEW in Theaters Starting Christmas Day.

December 24, 2014 by Lamb L.

It was truly troubling when craven hackers punched holes in Sony Pictures Entertainment, data dumping private email and employees’ personal information for anyone with an Internet connection to peruse, but when the so-called Guardians of Peace successfully got Sony to shelve THE INTERVIEW, it was shocking. Fortunately, the nation’s independent cinemas stepped up, offering a couple hundred screens in defiance of the terrorists. The latest Seth Rogan/James Franco comedy/bromance is not in Laemmle Theatres’ wheelhouse, but of course we feel rather strongly about the First Amendment and are pleased to open THE INTERVIEW at the Music Hall on Christmas Day, the NoHo 7 on January 31 and the Playhouse 7 on New Year’s Day.

Greg Laemmle has been speaking with the media, including NPR, about this extraordinary turn of events. “Do we as art house theaters have a particular axe to grind with North Korea? No. Do we have a particular reason to support raunchy, R-rated comedies? No. But we do see some real problems in the idea that someone lurking in the shadows can shut down the release of material they don’t like.”

What’s more, the excellent Korean fusion food truck Rice Balls of Fire will be at the Music Hall Christmas Day. They are also going to cater our Sing-Along FIDDLER ON THE ROOF screening tonight at the Playhouse.

See the Films on the Oscar Documentary Shortlist at Laemmle and Online

December 10, 2014 by Lamb L.

The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced January 15th but Oscar completionists can get a head start on the Documentary Features category thanks to the Academy’s 15-film shortlist and Laemmle Theaters.

The Academy’s Documentary Branch narrowed the field to 15 from 134 submissions. While we’ve already screened many films, some are still in theaters, and five will play as morning shows over the next few weeks. By the time nominations are announced, every film on the shortlist will have played at one or more of our theaters… for those keeping track! For those not located near our theatres, thankfully, a few streaming sites are showing some of these films. However, there are usually different location restrictions on some of these sites, such as Netflix. Of course, one of the most common ways to watch films that are restricted is by purchasing a VPN. Some are better than others, but there are reviewing websites online allowing users to read more about some of the best VPNs out there. That being said, alongside using a VPN, you can also use a proxy server to access geographically restricted content. For more information about using a proxy to access websites such as The Pirate Bay that feature films and TV shows, check out the Avoid Censorship website. Did you also know that you can use a VPN to enjoy TV shows and movies using Kodi? For more information about some of the most popular VPNs for Kodi users, head to the makeawebsitehub website. Anyone located near our theatres can keep reading to see if they’ll be able to come and watch these Academy Award nominees.

Weekend morning shows in Claremont, North Hollywood, Pasadena, and West LA:

12/13 – 12/14 ART AND CRAFT
12/20 – 12/21 THE KILL TEAM
12/27 – 12/28 KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON
01/03 – 01/04 LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM

THE INVISIBLE FRONT Q&A’s this Weekend at the Music Hall

November 20, 2014 by Lamb L.

Winner of the Audience Award at the international film festival “Kino Pavasaris” in Vilnius 2014, THE INVISIBLE FRONT is the story of one of the 20th centuries most significant anti-Soviet resistance movements, told through the words and experiences of Juozas Luksa and his fellow Forest Brothers. Their war was completely unknown to the public in the West. The Soviet Security forces, fighting against them, dubbed the conflict “The Invisible Front.”

THE INVISIBLE FRONT filmmakers Vincas Sruoginis, Jonas Ohman, and Mark Johnston will participate in Q&A’s after the 7 PM screenings at the Music Hall on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22.
