Concession Specials Help The Planet!

CLIF Bars go for $2. O.N.E. Coconut Water (16.9 oz) for $3 and our Climate Ride Combo featuring CLIF Bar, Coconut Water, and small popcorn for only $7. You may swap out a small bottled water or fountain drink if you don’t fancy the coconut water. Though we’re not sure why you would; we can’t get enough of the (admittedly) trendy beverage!

Proceeds from the specials support CLIMATE RIDE CALIFORNIA, a 5-day, 320 mile group cycling adventure through Northern California. The ride (May 19-23) benefits a variety of environmental causes focusing on renewable energy and sustainable transit.

This really is a fantastic and worthwhile cause. We should all be taking steps to help the planet after all, and shifting our attention towards renewable energy is a fundamental part of this.

With this in mind, if you want to go the extra mile, you might also want to do some research to ensure that your home energy comes from a renewable source. Not sure where to start? If you are reading from Texas, researching electric companies in dallas can make it easier for you to compare your options.

The New Look of Laemmle.com is Coming!

Dear Laemmle Patrons,

It’s a time of transformation for Laemmle and I’m pleased to have this opportunity to share some exciting new developments with you. First and foremost, there’s our new location, the Laemmle NoHo 7! This state-of-the-art theater opened last December at 5240 Lankershim Blvd. in the heart of the North Hollywood arts district. The venue features seven screens, digital projection, stadium seating, and is only two blocks from Metro. With the NoHo 7, we look forward to contributing to the burgeoning arts and cultural scene in North Hollywood and the broader East Valley region.

On the virtual front, we have a brand new website in the works. It will include features such as Premiere Card ticket purchasing and reloading, site customization tools, staff reviews, theater blogs, and a slew of other enhancements. Once there has been some details relayed back to us by the web design team, that can handle website design in Vaughan and similar locations for example, we’ll get back to you with some more features and benefits of the newly designed site!

We’ve also seized this moment to update our logo and other communications with an aesthetic and attitude that better reflects who we are today and where we’re heading. The new header on this website is just the beginning. You’ll see further evidence of the new look in the coming days as we transition everything from our flyers and email newsletter to our for-sale merchandise and even employee uniforms (don’t be afraid to tell ’em how smart they look!).

As you may have heard, after two decades serving the Hollywood area we were unable to come to terms on a lease extension and have closed our Sunset 5 theater. We leave with fond memories and a deepening commitment to exhibiting quality film throughout Los Angeles. When the time is right, we will be back. In the meantime, we look forward to the imminent NoHo opening as well as other future projects where we’ll be taking on the role of both landlord and tenant.

FAREWELL, MY QUEEN marks the return of acclaimed director Benoit Jacquot (A Single Girl, Seventh Heaven, Sade, Deep in the Woods) and brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie Antoinette in the final days before the full-scale outbreak of the Revolution. Iconic Royal Theatre marquee to be demolished this summer as part of three-screen conversion

One of the most iconic signs of West Los Angeles has for more than 40 years heralded the best in art and foreign cinema to the continuous flow of traffic along Santa Monica Boulevard. But Laemmle Theaters’ Royal marquee, with its distinctive 17-foot-wide panels, will soon dim forever. It is slated for removal late this summer when we will temporarily close the theater for an expansion project. The new three-screen complex will feature a more modern marquee.

Since the Laemmles took over the theater in 1972, the marquee has advertised such art-house hits as RAN, HOWARD’S END, SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, THE QUEEN and WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Said Laemmle Theatres President Greg Laemmle: “Financially, it is just too difficult to make a go of it with a single screen theatre. But in addition to this, having three screens instead of just one will give us more flexibility in opening and extending runs on the more “artistic” films which Los Angeles audiences have come to expect at the Royal. As for the marquee, the old marquee is great, and we’re proud to see it graced with Paul Davis’ GRAND ILLUSION images. But the cost of creating custom marquee panels is prohibitive, especially for some of the small, independent distributors whose films we regularly show here. Distributors often end up spending more on the marquee panels than they do on display advertising. That just doesn’t make sense. And from an architectural standpoint, we have photos of the theatre from the 40’s (and before) which show the theatre (then named the Tivoli) with a smaller, square marquee with a vertical blade sign. We believe that something like this will be more in keeping with the theatre’s original Neo-Classic architecture.”

On the marquee: BATHING BEAUTY and CANDLELIGHT IN ALGERIA

For the theater’s current attraction, a new restoration of Jean Renoir’s masterpiece, GRAND ILLUSION, distributor Rialto Pictures wanted to give the marquee a farewell gift; a full-color broadside created by acclaimed artist Paul Davis, who gave Joe Papp’s Public Theater its signature art and ad look, as well as creating numerous other theater and film posters. Among Davis’s most famous works on Papp’s posters for Three Penny Opera and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. He recently created the poster for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival’s special presentation of Abel Gance’s Napoleon.

IN THE FAMILY actor/writer/director Patrick Wang and actor Trevor St. John will participate in a Q&A after the 8:30 screening at the Monicas on Friday, May 4. Trevor St. John and crew from the film will do the same after the 1 PM screening on Saturday, May 5.
THE PERFECT FAMILY director Anne Renton and actors Angelique Cabral and Rebecca Wackler will participate in a Q&A after the 5:20 and 7:40 screenings at the Monicas on Saturday, May 5.
SOUND OF MY VOICE director Zal Batmanglij will participate in a Q&A after the 5:40 screening at the Playhouse 7 on Saturday, May 5.
The first 30 ticket buyers to come to the theater with a ticket to see the 7:50 screening of FIRST POSITION opening night at the Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles will receive a FREE Bloch pointe shoe key-chain and a poster signed by the director.
Q&A’s with THE HIGHEST PASS filmmaker Adam Schomer and Sattva Yoga founder Anand Mehrotr Friday, May 4 following the 7:50pm show at the Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica and on Saturday, May 5 following the 7:45pm show at the Fallbrook 7 in West Hills.

Bob Laemmle recommends QUEEN TO PLAY

Occasionally — about once or twice a year — Laemmle Theatres owner Bob Laemmle likes to put a personal stamp of approval on one of the many movies we show. Here is his latest:

I would like to offer a recommendation for the French film QUEEN TO PLAY. When I first saw this film two years ago, both my wife and I found it to be a deeply enjoyable film. It has taken two years for the film to finally reach our screens due to the fact that the initial distributor went bankrupt. QUEEN TO PLAY stars Sandrine Bonnaire, who first became a star at age 18 in Agnès Varda’s 1985 film VAGABOND. Her co-star is Kevin Kline in a superb French-speaking performance. It is all that you could hope a French film would offer you. It is as well a heartwarming female-empowerment story. It will not have a large advertising budget so if you see and enjoy this film please pass along your recommendations to your friends.
