THE FRUIT HUNTERS Q and A with Bull Pullman May 13 at the Monica
Bill Pullman and Hollywood Orchard host the premiere screening of THE FRUIT HUNTERS, directed by Yung Chang (Up The Yangtze), May 13 at the Monica. The screening begins at 7:30 PM. Pullman, a rare fruit aficionado and founder of Hollywood Orchard, will join three other subjects who are featured in the film for a post-screening Q&A moderated by entertainment reporter Zorianna Kit.

The fascinating new documentary FREE THE MIND brings together two groups of people whose numbers are increasing — children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and military veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder — and explores the possibility that at least some of these people from both groups can be greatly helped by meditation. Danish filmmaker Phie Ambo: “I was very impressed with the courage and openness that the veterans showed by signing up for the breathing program but even more surprised to see how they transformed themselves over the week long intervention.”
We open the film May 17 at the Music Hall and the next day at the Playhouse, Monica and Claremont.

LEVIATHAN co-director Lucien Castaing-Taylor will participate in a Q&A following the 7:30 PM screening at the Music Hall 3 on Friday, May 10.
A groundbreaking, immersive portrait of the contemporary commercial fishing industry filmed off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts. LEVIATHAN follows a hulking groundfish trawler into the surrounding murky black waters on a weeks-long fishing expedition.
Employing an arsenal of cameras that passed freely from film crew to ship crew; that swoop from below sea level to astonishing bird’s-eye views, the film that emerges is unlike anything that has been seen before.

Steven Soderbergh’s “State of Cinema” address
Recently retired from filmmaking, Steven Soderbergh delivered a terrific, funny, passionate and dead-on “State of Cinema” address at the San Francisco Int’l Film Fest in which he lamented the decline of Hollywood movies. He began by saying “the problem is that cinema as I define it and as something that inspired me is under assault by the studios and from what I can tell with the full support of the audience.”
Another highlight: describing meetings with the studio executives he disdains: “I want to jump up on the table and scream and go ‘do you know how lucky we are to be doing this? Do you understand that the only way to repay that karmic debt is to make something good, is to make something ambitious, is to make something beautiful, something memorable?'”
