Time Again to Sing from the Rooftops!

December 19, 2013 by Lamb L.

Will the matchmaker make you “the perfect match?”  There’s only one way to find out … join us this year for our 6th ANNUAL FIDDLER ON THE ROOF CHRISTMAS EVE SING-A-LONG!

This year, the popular Fiddler program has been extended to more venues to accommodate demand including, for the first time, the PLAYHOUSE 7 and the CLAREMONT 5.

In addition to exuberant movie and song, the evening will feature TRIVIA with PRIZES being awarded to Fiddler buffs with the quickest recall.  Dressing in COSTUME is not required, but highly encouraged! Who knows, perhaps the best costume will garner a prize?  That will be up to the emcee.  Indeed, each location will feature its own host, among them our very own GREG LAEMMLE.

“Christmas Eve isn’t just Chinese food anymore!” says Greg Laemmle. “We welcome all those in the community who are looking for an alternative Christmas eve experience.”

He continues,  “This is your once-a-year chance to be the star of the shtetl. Join voices with friends and neighbors and sing your heart out alongside Fiddler’s screen legends,” he continues.  “And it’s okay if you haven’t memorized all the songs. We provide the lyrics.”

Song highlights include the iconic “TRADITION”, “IF I WERE A RICH MAN”,  “TO LIFE”, “SUNRISE SUNSET”, “DO YOU LOVE ME?” and “ANATEVKA”, among many, many more.

Don’t miss the buggy! Those who wish to attend the program are advised to purchase tickets in advance as the program has traditionally sold to capacity.

See you in the shtetl…

Village Voice 2013 Film Poll – INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS and HER Top the List

December 18, 2013 by Lamb L.

The Village Voice just published their 2013 Film Poll, in which almost 100 American film critics vote in 13 categories — in addition to Best Film, there’s Movie Everyone is Wrong About and Worst Film — using a very clever point system. The Coen Brothers’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS won Best Film in something of a landslide, followed by HER, 12 YEARS A SLAVE and BEFORE MIDNIGHT. The top documentary, very high up at number 5 on the list, is THE ACT OF KILLING, which we’ll be playing this Saturday and Sunday, December 21 and 22 at 10:30 AM at the Monica with the director in attendance for Q&A’s. Oscar Isaac of INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS and Adèle Exarchopoulos of BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR won Best Actor and Actress. There are also a number of entertaining side articles like “15 Documentaries that Help You Understand the World Right Now,” “How Ralph Fiennes Brought His Marvelous INVISIBLE WOMAN” to the Screen” and “20 Most Memorable Movie Villains of 2013.” Enjoy!

Santa Monica Daily Press: “Celebrating 75 Years of Laemmle”

December 12, 2013 by Lamb L.

Sarah Spitz of the Santa Monica Daily Press wrote this nice piece about us. It covers a lot of ground very concisely, including our company history, our various 75th anniversary events, the Laemmle Charitable Foundation and even a couple movies reviews (NEBRASKA and PHILOMENA)!

L.A. Film Critics Association Announces 2013 Honorees

December 9, 2013 by Lamb L.

LAFCA just announced their 2013 winners, among them many films we’ve played or are playing, and one very lovely picture we are proud to be opening very soon: Spike Jonze’s HER, which they named Best Picture (in a tie with GRAVITY). They also gave it the award for Best Production Design and the movie was runner up in three other categories: Best Screenplay, Director and Score. HER is an original, moving, funny, beautifully realized knock-out featuring Scarlett Johansson’s best-yet peformance. And you never even see her face.
