Midsommar Scare Fest Schedule:
I Know What You Did Last Summer, July 4: Four young friends bound by a tragic accident are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. star. Format: DCP.
Jaws, July 11: When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it’s up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss star. Format: DCP.
Friday the 13th, July 18: A group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which, years before, was the site of a child’s drowning. Format: DCP.
The Wicker Man, July 25: A police sergeant is sent to a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl who the townsfolk claim never existed. Stranger still are the residents’ pagan rites. Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee star. Format: DCP.
If Jaws is shown again, I ask the theatre to please consider adding an advocate for sharks to the movie showing.
These animals need our protections and showing a film about how they are ‘vicious killers’ is like showing a film with black actors as welfare queens(taking a line from GLOW), latinos as rapists(using a line from the Trump speech), or pit bulls as rabid animals(oh so many sources). It is wrong, in accurate, hurtful, life threatening. .
Having an advocate for sharks-maybe who will be receiving donations from the attendees during intermission- would help in reversing the damage this film has done to them.
Please figure out a way to give back to them, since you are profiting from this film.
[author of the source novel] Peter Benchley later felt very bad about the fact that so many sharks, to this day, are being killed senselessly because people just think sharks are bad or they want a trophy. He said that if when he was writing the novel he had known about sharks what he knew years later, after he had really studied them and there was much more information about them (because other people studied them as a result of this movie), he said he wouldn’t have written the book. Despite all those millions he made…..the big thing was it demonized sharks. This is the one adverse, really negative thing that came out of Jaws: ever since this movie came out, shark-killing contests are run all over the world. On average, between 20 and 100 million sharks are murdered every year. Some species have been driven close to extinction, others are in danger… ”

Both of these top predators face multiple threats. These include commercial and sport-fishing, accidental catch by fisheries targeting other fish, and the global shark fin and shark meat trade. Like other sharks, these species are slow to reproduce. The bigeye thresher in particular takes more than a decade to mature and then only produces one or two pups per year.
Both species are being pulled out of the water much faster than they can replenish their own numbers – that’s a formula for extinction unless we act now.
